  • People using the term "silver bullet" when they mean "magic bullet" as in Vince Cable saying there's no "silver bullet" for the unemployment problem.

All those werewolves, coming over here, taking our jobs......

      • Schools rant, feel free to stop reading now.
I work (unpaid) in a class of 12 under-achievers (various reasons: disability/poverty/parental neglect etc). Their learning problems are exacerbated by behavioural problems, which are in turn exacerbated by problems such as hunger, poor diet (Coke & crisps for breakfast?!). Anyway.
They need intensive work to get their reading up to standard, at the very least, but there isn't time or resources in the school day. Ideally, they'd have a helper each, simply to hear them read. As it is, none of them has a helper (teaching assistant) because of inadequate funding/budget cuts.

Today we hear that the dear Govt is to cut school funding even more. So these children are definitely going to leave school unable to read or write. Should we give up on them now, or later?

        • I agree with you TS.

In this day and age noone should have to live like that or have too put up with lack of financial help.

What happened to "Were all in this together?"

(dont want to steal your rant TS)

I know we shouldn't chat on here but I'm going to - please forgive me ladies!
I have just volunteered my time for a year in a local school as indeed I did in my children's school when they were younger. Feral parenting means these children don't get read with or to. Volunteers are needed desperately and if you have the time, please spare it.
I told my little gang of three boys this:-
            Reading

Why? Reading comes in many forms, be it five minutes with a newspaper and coffee, a comic hero caper thirty minutes before bedtime or on a lazy Sunday morning. My ultimate is a new tome read in 24 hours. Something "unputdownable"!
All are bonded by one word - escapism. Time taken, personal time, between just you and the written word. Everything a secret to be uncovered, page by guilty page.
Reading is a skill for life. Without it you can't learn to drive, choose the job of your dreams, write a shopping list and identify those said products in a supermarket. Let alone read the gaming instructions on your new xbox360/PS3 game. Words to be read are all around us. Guiding us to choices. Street names, directions, instructions, special offers and invitations. Without our reading skills we have no choices - simple. No excitement to look forward to.
I concur with every word you have said TS - it must feel a burden on top of an ever widening prescriptive curriculum. Remember that what you don't get in thanks or pay today, you may be the difference in a child's future tomorrow.

            • I'd just like to agree with the above few posts - shocking!

My rant, albeit very minor considering the above; Courier/Parcel Delivery Companies - if you are given a Parcel, for delivery within 48 Hours, on a Monday, I expect to receive it sometime on Wednesday - NOT bloody Friday at 4pm after I've sent off stroppy emails to the poor sod that gave you the parcel!

I also expect you to actually walk up the path to the House, with the parcel, not just drop it over the bloody gate, then drive off - you lazy g!t!

                    • Oh come on Grapes! I risk life and limb (fall over the detritus in my bedroom to find the camera and computer cable) to bring you a photo of an urban fox feet away from my back door, post it on the wildlife thread and no-one has looked or even liked. And that fox is the prettiest fox you would ever see!

                            • Mums who take their small kids out for the day to a family sunday lunch party and don't take anything for the kids in the way of spare clothes etc...

Then when small child 2 (who is 3) has a toiletting accident, has nothing spare for her to wear... and the poor girl ends up in wet/damp clothes soaked with urine for the rest of the day...

Took me to ask the place we were at for a towel to wrap her in, so I could at least dry her clothes under the hand dryer in the toilets....

                              • When my kids were little I took a wet mildly soapy flannel with us everywhere.

Thinking about it should probably do the same now...20 years on!
