  • Oh, for a book....

Oh for a book and a shady nook, whether indoors or out,
With the green leaves whispering overhead or the street-cries all about.
Where I may read, at all my ease, both of the new and old,
For a jolly good book, where-on to look, is better to me than gold...

    Love that little ditty.
Just put on the "Other Interests" thread that I like to read. However, I must say that recently "a jolly good book" has been rarer than hens teeth! If I get to the end of a book and cannot remember the plot two days later, or find myself thinking, "Oh, COME ON!!" when halfway through one, I know there's a problem! Sadly the last half a dozen titles I've read have fallen into either - or both - these categories!!
I judge a good book by how strong the urge is to go back to the beginning and starting it over!
So, come on, all you other readers out there, give me some recommendations. I like thrillers, historical novels , humorous stuff - nothing too gory and nothing by Jackie Collins, thank you! Any ideas welcome!

I'm much the same as you Creemteez, struggling to find a book that keeps my interest. The last one was recommended by a few people at work, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I wasn't impressed, but everyone ese was raving about it. Trilogy I think and just made into a film, so it must have some appeal. Needless to say, I'm not reading the other two! Sorry to be negative. I wait with interest to see what recommendations you get, it might be a help to me.

Yes, someone at work was reading that and told me it was a bit heavy going. Might have a go at it as she's offered to lend it to me when she's finished.

Someone else recommended The Hand That First Held Mine (Maggie O'Farrell), but I gave up on that as well. Very frustrating. I like a story that you can't put down.

I'mreading Bernard Cornwells Saxon books at the moment and really enjoying them also Simon Scarrows new Roman Legion book.

(I like history based books though)

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters (or any of her books actually, but I loved this one particularly). The Little Stranger: Amazon.co.uk: Sarah Waters: Books

The Help, by Kathryn Stockett is good. The Help: Amazon.co.uk: Kathryn Stockett: Books

I've just ordered Room - looking forward to trying it.

I'm not a very 'girlie' book lover. I've enjoyed Susanna Gregory's 'Matthew Bartholomew' series, based in mediaeval Cambridge, Peter Tremayne's 'Sister Fidelma' mysteries, based in 7th century Ireland and Patrick O'Brien's books. And loads of others too, but it would take too long to list them all.

Its my one great fear...........that old age would deprive me of my sight and ability to read books!

To read a book is to leave this world and visit another..............it's a drug I'm addicted to!

I'm currently reading The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho and before that Veronika Decides to Die...although it sounds pretty morbid it was actually a really uplifting read.

A series of books I read several years ago and still often think about when I feel times are tough was the Maya Angelou life story...starts with 'I know why the caged bird sings' and has about six or seven after...a truly inspirational lady.
