  • Supermarket swipe

Whilst in the supermarket at the weekend, you know, the one that isn't happy unless it has a share of everybody else's market, I noticed that they still had onion sets on sale. The packaging clearly stated best planted before end of April so seeing a manager barking out orders to his subordinates, I pointed out that no-one planting onion sets now would be likely to get a crop and beginners could possibly be buying the product in expectation of doing so. He looked at me as if I was stupid (maybe he is right in that) and then said "Oh, don't worry about it" and then put the packet I gave him back on the shelf. The till receipt invites comments on "How we did today" By golly they got comments.

Unfortunately it's the same in garden centres (who really should know better!) too. I've seen raddish, carrots, and parsnips in modules (roots all coming out of the bottom). Crazy stuff.. They just want your money at the end of the day.

I hope you put the comments to them in writing AP? I'd be interested to hear their response.

Not all of them thank you!

I had a customer a few weeks ago who got quite shirty when I told him we had no onion sets to sell him because it was too late to plant them

Ok, many buy us then (the large chains ).

I've yet to find a decent small nursery. Found a wicked one in cornwall, but it's a bit of a trek from wales!

Under the new system I can't be bothered to 'go advanced' to put a smiley on my message. It was soo much easier to just click on the emoticon.

There is a place between Pencoed and Bryncethin, just the other side of Heol-y-cyw Chris. They are cracking little nursery, bring everything on themselves and are really cheap compared to the big chains.

There is also a good DIY store in Aberkenfig called Bakers. They sell all seeds as individuals or by the mug, help yourself, call in around february when they get stock in. Super prices.

Just trying to find it on google maps.. I don't know the name, but I know the route I took.. Work's connection is slow at the mo, will post back when I find it! We were staying in Bodmin, so it's around that area!

                          Found it, grannymen:

Bodmind plant and herb centre - Home

Very knowledgable staff.. I was close to spending a lot of money there, and I presume the owner advised me otherwise (asking me where I was from - mentioning that my cool, wet windy climate wouldn't be suitable for the trees I had on my trolley). Not often would a place turn down a reasonable large sale! [it was my birthday.. I wanted a 'couple' of trees]
