I've had mixed thoughts about this program....
The heatsink for the greenhouse was great - am filing that in my "ideas" folder!
The dehydrator was a good idea, but surely it only works when it's really hot ouside?
I'm still not sure of what to think re the 750K "green" house - if I had that sort of money, I'm sure I could do that also!
It's not very realistic in terms of what the majority of us can afford to do to be more "green", is it! -
Think the idea of the programme is to have some things we can all do and some we may want to aspire to.
Does anybody know how he wired the heat sink in - could do something like that at home if I knew why. Understood how it worked but wasn't sure how to do!

They had a car battery powering the fan, until they could afford/scrounge a solar panel to power it instead...Comment

did anyone see the origanal? they used ground glass in the heat sink, a by product of some sort. you can get cheap solar panels proberbly enough to power the heat sink fan from caravan shops, do they have to turn the fan over everynight?Yo an' Bob

During the day the Solar pannel powered a 12V 120mm Computer fan. This sucked the hot air from the top of the Greenhouse and blew it into the heat sink. The glass was ground up wine and beer bottles from the pub.
At night the fan stopped and the heat trapped in the sink rose (hot air rises) into the greenhouse and kept it warm.My phone has more Processing power than the Computers NASA used to fake the Moon LandingsComment

Don't remember seeing the original one so this was all new to me. Am I right in my understanding then that if you use a solar fan then it'll all work automatically as no light = no power therefore no fan but if you use the car battery (as on Thursday night) then you'd have to have a timer or go and turn it off each night? Does anybody have any details of how you wire all this up - can probably manage it myself but would need clear instructions!

it is just a circle of wire. It starts at the battery and ends at the battery. Wireing up the Fan won't be difificult but you would have to dig a 2ft cube 2x2x2deep. line it with insulation, put in a pipe frame work then fill it with crushed glass.
If you want a wireing digrham I can draw you one up. but how will you recharge the battery. A 12v car battery is heavey about the same as a 70lt bag of compost.

It's OK NOG, not offended, probably didn't word my question very well. Was rather confused as to how the fan worked to pull the heat down into the heat sink - only half watching so didn't really see properly. Not sure I can be bothered really as the greenhouse usually stays pretty warm and is in a sheltered location so I may be better leaving as is rather than risk my back digging a hole! If I decide to install one and can't work it out then I may very well be in touch. Thanks for the offer.

I enjoyed first series and bought the book,but finding this series abit annoying as seem to jump from one project to another then back again following week (still watching and learning though!)Comment

It relies on the warm air during the day heating up what they've buried and from my physics lessons of 20 years ago I didn't think this would be particularly efficient.
I wonder how much of the heatsink effect they're actually getting from the back wall of the greenhouse being stone in both cases.
