any others on the forum like to catch fish to eat?

I managed to catch a nice bass at the weekend so having it for dinner tonight with homegrown potatoes and broad beans. apart from a little olive oil, seasoning and lemon it will all be produced by me so I'm feeling happy with myself at the mo!

I like to fish for trout, but it's getting quite expensive now!

The mackerel are inshore at the mo though and its a damm site cheaper to fish for those!

Love fly fishing (yes, it IS difficult to get the fly to bite on the hook) for trout, but as Snadge says, flippin expensive these days.

my OH fishes in the river just beside our plot which is basically at the bottom of the garden....he doesnt catch much - there are no trout in our river but he has caught carp which we have eaten

As a boy I grew up near the rivers Tweed, Teviot, Ettrick and Yarrow. Used to fly fish for trout and caught salmon by other means. When I move to Kent I fished Bewl Water a lot and usually had a freezer full by the end of season but arthritis put an end to that. As other have said it is getting quite costly nowadays.

I really want to try fishing... spent loads of time in Portugal eyeing up sea fishing stuff but not really knowing where to start. We're off to the west coast of Ireland soon...what are the chances of a total beginner catching a nice mackerel with virtually no equipment? Slim to none?

When the mackerel are in and biting, they're almost suicidal. I have often pulled up a trace of half a dozen feathers with each one carrying a mackerel.
If you can get a really cheap rod, some line, a weight, a swivel and a trace of feathers, you only need to chuck them where the fish are, and you will have mackerel for breakfast dinner and tea.

rhona, get yourself on a mackeral trip on a boat, you should catch plenty and all equipment should be supplied

the bass was delicious, i used a whole live mackeral to catch it!

I have my wee boat on the loch and I usually get out a couple of times a week. I love fresh fish........
On the upper loch (Torridon) I get mainly Pollack and Cod but when I venture out to the main loch and Loch Shieldaig I am spoiled for choice (pollack, mackeral, launce, codling, gurnard, dogfish & common Skate). You cant beat Skate wings poached in a nice fragrant Italian tomato sauce (i'm getting hungry now).
When I'm not deep sea fishing, I enjoy a bit of fly fishing (like bobleponge), but only when the salmon are running or when I'm on the hunt for the elusive sea trout.

When you go to Ireland get yourself one of these little hand reels,a couple of feathers on hooks, a couple of treble swivles, a bit of lead weight, stand on the shore or pier, chuck it in and wind in slowly; if there are fish there especially mackeral, you will be very very surprised when you pull it back in. Remember to post the pics of you trying to get the fish off the hooks

nice part of the world wee scot and a little different fishing from mine on the southcoast, in the summer and spring i fish mainly for black bream and bass and in the winter it is cod and whiting although we don't get many smaller cod and mainly target the biggies with large squid and cuttlefish baits, also get rays, congers plus the normal suspects!
