You honestly can't beat fish you've caught yourself. Freshness is everything (in fact mackerel cooked ON the boat is absolutely delish).
I fly fish for trout all the time, and I reckon it's worth the price ( then again I would say that as I work part-time in a fishery).
Fish that are bred for put-and-take waters are bred for angling. In other words in natural ponds with natural food and have plenty of room to swim and build muscle.
Fish bred for the supermarket are more often than not brought up in stew ponds the equivalent of battery hens. Look at a rainbow trout next time your on a supermarket. Tail and fins will be stunted and belly, flesh pretty hollow.
Trust me, a fish caught from a well stocked loch is simply out of this world. Full tail and fins, lots of flesh. Worth that wee bit extra for the 'free-range' effect!Last edited by mrpaulbradley; 17-06-2011, 05:32 AM.Clay soil is just the big yins way of letting you know nothing good comes easy.

I went fishing a fair bit when growing up in New Zealand. Mostly fishing for trout on the lake but we did go sea fishing once when I was about 9....and I caught an octopus!! The photo of my tiny, horrified face still makes me giggle.
I haven't been fishing since I went vegetarian when I was 16 or so - and the ONLY type of meat that I actually miss is trout that has been caught within the hour, barbequed in steaks with lemon. Yum.

You can catch mackerel using a line and hooks baited with nothing more than silver foil. My great nephew and his pals catch loads. They don't freeze well so I eat mackerel for breakfast, lunch and supper when I have them.
They salt well though and you can dry them though they don't keep for long.
