Sainsburys offer sustainable fish for FREE

On the back of various fish programmes of late Sainsburys are having a day where if you request one of the five main fish Cod, Haddock, Tuna, Salmon and Prawns you will be offered an alternative sustainable fish for free.

What a fantastic idea!!
We've been eating loads of different types of fish since we came out here- and there are some really yummy ones we'd never tried before- most of them much cheaper too!

I reckon I was stuck in a bit of a rut in the UK with my thoughts on fish varieties- but also there was such a smaller choice.
Good on Jamie- and Sainsbury's!!

Hmmm I have to add a note of caution though, it might not be every Sainsburys and I can bet (as I am going shopping tomorrow morning first thing) they wont have the other sustainable fish in stock tomorrow, or there'll be some catch....not that I am being cynical or anything

Out of Intrest, for the past couple of months i have been buying fresh pouting from Mick, our fishmonger in tesco. The fillets are smaller than cod but from the same family and is half the price. It is sweet and juicy and takes no cooking at all. Its good in batter, or cooked for a minute or so in the microwave in a sauce. I bought just a pound (500 grms) today for £2.50 and very nice it was too.

Yes, it's an obvious publicity stunt and I wouldn't particularly count on getting free fish if I rolled up at my local Sainsburys tomorrow. However, I think this is a really important issue and if the offer makes more people aware of sustainable fishing practices, then great!

I rod caught my own sea fish for years and love some of the lesser known varieties. if this campaign by Jamie gets people to try different fish I am all for it.

Likewise if Hughs fish fight can get the European Common Fishing Policy changed with regards to disgards then so much the better.

For those who don't know `discards` is the term given to the half of fish caught in the North Sea, thrown back overboard dead because it is illegal to land it.

If you like pouting then you should try Dab(another underrated fish),lightly fried/grilled & just a small drizzle of lemon juice

I used to catch and eat dabs as a kid in Ireland.. very nice and sweet.
The only dab i have nowadays is with a cloth on my head whilst digging weeds out.

My oh went in and asked for salmon for 4

Then had to ask about any offers. She was offered a tiny piece of sea trout......not enough for one but still had to buy the salmon!!!!

Has anyone had a different reaction???

Total Con! (as I thought it would be)
You have to buy the salmon/tuna/cod etc and they give you a 'sample' (not enough to feed a cat) of hake/or other fish,.... although I thought hake was endangered??!!

I Walked off and didnt buy any fish from them!!
