basically, you buy the domain name, but that doesn't mean you have a place for a website, it's just the name you own.
Then you have to find someone who will host your pages, a domain host.
The easiest thing to do is find a company that will let you buy a particular domain name, and also host your pages for you [this means though, that you will own the domain name through them, not necessarily own it outright yourself, which means if anything goes wrong with your hosts services, you can't just take your domain name and go somewhere else]
Some webhosts will have an online site-builder, so you can drag and drop various bits and peices to create a webpage, and they will automatically sort out links within pages.
Some won't provide this, so you will have to learn or get someone to design your pages for you.
You will have a control panel of some kind so you can upload your pages from your computer to your site, and/oe you will be given a username/password to do it separately using a ftp program instead of using the webhosts online control panel.

Many thanks to all for your wonderful advice.
Unfortunately as often happens when I'm abroad I've really struggled to log in for the last few days, so not been able to reply earlier.
I have sorted myself out with an email address and stuff, and I believe I may also have the capacity to do a website thingy, although clearly not the ability.
To those lovely peeps who offered help I thank you heartily, if I'd been able to log on earlier and read your messages I would definitely have taken one of you up on your kind offer.
