What do folk normally buy for Christening gifts?

I've a friend, who's invited me to his baby's christening. I think a couple of us are giong to club together to buy something for him, and I know it'll fall to me !

What do you normally buy for such events? Do you buy for the baby, or the parents?

I think you can dedicate a newly planted tree too. Someone we know had a tree planted and dedicated to a new baby.

Oh, they live in Belgium too - forgot to mention that..

I did thnk of vouchers, but no idea what shops are over there.

You'll be amazed at the different keepsakes there are. On our 8th grandchild's baptism I was really running out of ideas, but amongst other things we bought him an engraved silver yo-yo. Went down a treat.

Found a pirate ship which is quote nice, a silver money box. Will get that, and something else.. christening photo album perhaps?

Album would be good. There are always millions of pics of a newborn.
Ours received little mugs and those stable plates with a steep dish edge from the Beatrix Potter range. Really cute and practical.

There's some pretty rubbish stuff that's marketed as Christening gifts which most of the parents I know (whilst touched by the thought) have consigned to the back of a cupboard. Some of it is OK but obviously think before you buy. Most of the silver stuff isn't very practical and doesn't really serve a purpose although, for a girl, jewelry can be nice. I tend to go for books as they always seem to go down well.
