Frozen birds

Last time we had a cold snap of 4 days , we found a dead male blackbird huddled up in a nook in the compost. Since then we decided to leave out food for the birds during cold snaps. I have heard that most birds can't last more than 3 days with out food. Am I right with this?? Today I sprinkled half a packet of quaker oats on to the snow covered lawn and hung up fat balls. I have 4 fatballs for the birds on the allotment. Does anyone know which specific foods different types of birds eat so I can feed a good cross-section of them?? This can't be nice for any wild animal! At this point I even feel sorry for the wild bunnies who no doubt should be in training for the gymnastic skills required to get into our plot later on in the year!!

Feeding birds - I buy a wild bird seed mix, and peanuts, and put them in their respective hanging feeders. From observation in my own garden, birds ain't that fussy - I've had great tit, blue tit, coal tit, house sparrow, tree sparrow, chaffinch and greenfinch hanging on my feeders, with blackbird, thrush, fieldfare, wood pigeon, robins and wrens visiting to collect spillages, dropped seed etc. Oh yeah - jackdaws will eat anything, anywhere!

we get the the fluffy tailed squirrel birds aswell

I think it was blue tits which used to peck the tops of milkbottles to get at the cream too, but was that in the winter? Don't think they like our semi-skimmed stuff!.(Whatever happened to the milk bottles on the doorstep with 2ins of frozen milk sticking out of the top? )

If I had the fluffy tailed squirrel birdies of the grey variety, I would shoot them ! My last house in Inverness had red squirrel birdies, roe deer and pine martens all visiting the garden on a regular basis - and only a five minute walk from the city centre
