Flies!!!! Innundated why??

What is going on; I have been innundated with flies the last few days, they are coming in from outside. They look like very small house flys.

is it only here near The Wash in Lincolnshire or does anyone else have the same problem............... they are driving us spare

We get a few, but I put fly-papers up as they drive me potty too. Check around in case there is a corpse nearby (cat/rabbit/badger) as that may be the attractant. I had friends who lived two fields away from a Pig Farm, and if the wind was in a certain direction, they were inundated. As soon as the wind changed, they went. Weird. Hope you get it sorted asap.

The only time we get swarms of horrible little black flies is when the farmers slurry the fields

They are fruit flies and we had the same problem slightly further down the coast earlier this year.

Small glasses filled with red wine, water, and a drop or two of washing up liquid standing about mops the little devils up.

Morning All, cloudy and damp here. Those flies sound a bit bigger than fruit flies, how horrid. I noticed last night that a trough of nasturtiums near one of my veg beds is covered in black fly. I know the nasturtiums are sacrificial, but it does seem a shame, they were lovely.

Only joking, no idea why you have them but we get 'harvest' flies now and again (little black so and so's!). Could be because the farmers are harvesting possibly!

Aaaaaaaaaaah! There is a field next door to me where the farmer seems to have a permanent obsession of spreading rotting onions, stench is unbelieveable when the breeze is our way; could that be the source of the flys too?

We used to get loads when I was growing up...our house was situated between two pig farms,both about 100 yards away so it really didn't matter which way the wind was blowing.
Don't get them too much now but I find Corris' tip works with both fruit and house flies...jam jar with a wine vinegar and washing up liquid then cover it with clingfilm and pop a couple of holes in it so the flies can get in and not out.

In my last home I suffered what I thought was one of the twelve plagues of Egypt as I got up one morning, went downstairs to find the living room window covered in very small, slow-flying house flies! I duly got the hoover out and sucked 'em all up, got ready for work and left the house. Upon my return I was horrified to see that the window was COVERED in them again! Knowing there must be a reason for it began searching around and finally noticed there seemed to be a lot of them also hanging around the fireplace.
Suspecting the worst, I got my ex to come over and have a look up the chimney while I made myself scarce.
Sure enough when I got home there was a note saying. "There was a very dead pigeon up the chimney.- Don't look in the wheelie bin".
I suppose he had SOME uses.....

I bought the red top fly trap and can report it's fantastic. We've been inundated with flies 'cos of chickens and cat poo (our cat, hasn't cottoned on that he's supposed to go nextdoor) and I hung one of these near the coop at the end of the garden and although it didn't seem to have much effect at first, now it's a horrible buzzing pile of flies. Think it has to develope/ferment? It really isn't nice, and I'm not looking forward to getting rid of it and I suffer pangs of guilt 'cos I'm killing things even though they're horrible flies!

For the past two years we had this, then the council got involved last year. So far only one or two flies have made in to the house all summer this year. Wonder if your problem is linked?

This is Lincolnshire | Residents of the village of Heckington are being swarmed by a plague of flies. Landlady of the Oak Pub Liz Lowe says the pub is full of them.
