My littlest Reetlet (4) is incredibly sensitive about deaths to the nature in our garden.
This can prove a little tricky at times, especially with the sparrows, in the eaves above the back windows of our house, who seem to eject nestlings out of the nest on a regular basis, resulting in them plummeting to the concrete below.
We have to inpsect the concrete several times a day at this time of year, in the hope of removing the latest casualty before she sees it, otherwise it's heartbroken, inconsolable sobs and cries of 'I miss the baby birdie", for a long time afterwards.
I've talked about out Mr and Mrs Blackbird before and they are firm favourites with the Reetlets. Today The middle Reetlet spotted one of Mrs Blackbirds latest brood (this is her third this year which have comprised 4, 2 and now 3 babies, respectively), on the gravel path, very much dead. She announced her find in a very loud voice and her little sister promptly burst into near hysterical crying! It took me ages to calm her down and point out that Mrs Blackbird still had 2 of her babies (I checked) to look after.
She's did eventually calm down but she then started to worry that Mrs B would be upset and missing her baby ..... which then reminded her how much SHE was missing the baby and prompted another round of tears.
Bless her little cotton socks. She can be a thug, a bully and a monster (ask middle Reetlet) but she has a caring heart and a sensitive nature.
