          Crikey this is tough!

Went to see ex-competitors yesterday afternoon and met with MD and former colleague (now head of major projects).

They want to offer me a job - back in an industry I'm familiar with (construction), have numerous contacts (still) and have a certain level of respect.

Trouble is it's 1hr drive away at minimum.

The job sounds great - it's almost like I can travel back in time to when I joined my previous company 10 years ago, but with the knowledge, expertise and experience garnered over the previous 10 years. How often does one get to do that!?

Anyways - I aired my concerns regarding travel costs, time and so on. This morning I have to put together a "wish list" of things I'd need and see what they say.

Spanner in the proverbial - I am meeting my potential new boss this evening after work to be given a "handover file" of the jobs/tasks/projects that await me in a couple of weeks.

          My head hurts!

No, the pain is from not ducking.

Trouble is, my gut says that the shorter commute is better, but also that the other job is more me.

              Arrrgh!

See what they say about my proposal...

Dude, being a complete computer mollusc I stayed out of the original post as I had nothing sensible to add (although I did note that the year you were born, with that song you mentioned, I suddenly felt old) but I have been watching to see how things go.
You are clearly 1. Popular and 2. Professional in your working life otherwise you wouldnt have all these possible job opportunities beating a path to your door.
I've nothing sensible to add as I dont really know the commercial job market, but I would agree with G4, the gut feeling is often the way, and if that means a shorter commute to give you a better work/life balance (hideous phrase) then personally I would heading that way.
Good luck with whatever you decide, I have no doubts you'll succeed and be popular wherever life leads you.

Indeed - the furthest one is the better job, but the closer one could offer more "home" time - possibly.

Cheers dude, it means a lot that you've taken the effort to respond - very grateful, and thanks for the comments. Would love to meet one day and prove you right.

I know - and it's not one I'm familiar with.

Dude, for what its worth this is my two penneth.

In life we step forward for a reason and that is because we want a new challenge, to take a step in the other direction back to something you are safer with in my humble opinion would be the wrong move.

Its like a pair of old slippers, they fit perfectly but they still have a hole in the bottom. By that I mean there was a reason you left your previous chosen path.

The best advise I can give is write down a list of all the pros and cons of each position and the one which grabs you more chose it. It doesn't matter which it is, it will be right because you want it to be.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Does your wish list include 4 slightly longer days at work and one shorter one working from home?

Man been there got the T Shirt, I don't think construction will properly recover for another 2-3 years, the market is too uncertain.
