Know what you mean TS, I envy Mrs Snadger. Himself can't and wouldn't if he could.

Oi, why you only admiring MEN what can? - my mate put their entire central heating system in (boiler and everything) while her fella sat on his fat arse

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sorry to be blunt but in my own opinion anyone who considers installing a gas appliance without the correct training and equipment is a moron. They are a danger to themselves and others for a large distance around them.

Unless you have actually attended a gas explosion you have know idea how powerful they can be. Would you set to and try to defuse a 500lb second World War bomb? in your own home I very much doubt it.

DIY is great providing you stay within the limits of your competence, step outside your comfort zone and it becomes dangerous.

Back to the original question, I reckon saving 2/3 of the price would be about right.

I'm nearly finished in the nid d'amour upstairs, and having only paid for a sparky I've saved over half on the 2 quotes I received for the job. If you're doing it all, 2/3 seems reasonable.

Thanks Bob. I think I can safely say my original observation has now been ratified to my delight!

Erm, whilst I applaud your endevours Snadger, is there a Mrs Snadger, and will she be happy living in the renovated house.

The reason I ask is that OH - reasonable as he is on DIY -I would not be happy him doing a 'big job' like the one you mention.

I might be a tad worried about 'things going bump in the night' - or even bang.

I've done it all before valmarg.............the difference was I was living in the midst of it way back in the the late eighties!

Mrs S wasn't too keen at the time about going to bed up a ladder as we had no staircase at one time but the renovation turned out well and we made a healthy profit when we sold!

This ones not for profit though.............rather to live comfortably in our retirement. Because I'm not living in it (I live about 20 mile away) I can take my time and do it the way we want it rather than to make a profit.
I will add value to the house but it will be my offspring who will benefit from that!
My OH is disabled so I have added touches that will make her and my retirement more comfortable.
                    Like a roof...............Lol

                      Snadger,

My comments were not meant to be personal more a general thing. I attended my first gas related death at the age of 17 whilst apprentice at East Midlands Gas Board. Over the last 48 years I have been unfortunate enough to go to several more incidents where there has been serious injury or death and it colours my view on the subject.

My advice therefore to anyone is yes install your own radiators and the pipe work that goes with them after all if you get it wrong you only get wet.

But have the appliance installed by a professional, That way you should be safer and at least you will maintain your manufacturer's guarantee which on a Baxi is worth the extra cost of paying the installer.

                      Colin

Well I know my limitations too, and water and lecci I know it all in theory, but would rather have someone else to undertake the work.

Sounds to me like your walls will probably be lath and plaster, I would ensure you have a working shower on site if you intend chain drilling those walls!!!, otherwise all we'll be able to see is the whites of your eyes.

                        Happy DIYing snadge.
