  • How long is or was your commute?

At the moment it takes me an hour to get to work (door to door) via the car and park and ride. Last year when I used the train it was an hour and 20 and in the job before that a ten min ride.

We are looking to relocate next year and looking at potential living areas from likely job destinations and just wondered how long some people commuted or used to commute to work. Where we want to live will be too far to commute, so weighing up the options.

It's something very close to home for me (pardon the pun).

LadyWayne used to commute into London - and spend around 3 hours each day travelling to and from work. When Bean came along her whole priorities changed, and she moved job, outside of London - changing an hour and half each way commute for a 45 minute commute.

The job I was made redundant from last year used to be a 25-30 minute drive away, although only 7 miles in distance. My current job is 20 miles away, but only takes 35-40 minutes.

My new job will be around 20 miles away, and the journey is possible in 20 minutes.

Google maps is pretty good at showing travel times, distance, and makes a fair stab at showing approximate costs too.

So you'll be home sooner, but it'll cost you more HW!!

My commute takes roughly 25mins through twisty country lanes, I'm sat in my log cabin office looking out over fields watching race horses practising, life ain't all that bad.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I work 17miles from home and the drive takes me between 30 and 40 mins depending... part of the drive is down single track country lanes (beware HGV's, cows, llamas etc) and the other part is on normal A roads, but is a motorway junction, so I can often spend 15-20mins driving the last 2 miles!

I wouldn't mind using public transport, but there isn't a bus that can get me those 17 miles before 9am!

Not really dude - like you, my commute is through twisties whereas before I was subject to town traffic for a large part of my journey. The new job will be much the same (twisties), though the roads carve through different terrain.

I hate town traffic, which is why I rarely visit the big smoke.

I much prefer shopping in market towns anyway, there's far better choice, than the high street in any major town.

These are the personal opinions of a dude that hates shopping, so please bear this in mind before you start firing bullets at me.

My old job was 22 miles away but it would take a good 50 minutes each way because of traffic. During the daytime or late evening you could do it in 25 minutes.

My current job is about 13-14 miles away but will take a good 35-40mins again because of traffic.

Does anyone know if there is a facility in google, or something else which allows you to draw an outline of say 30 min car journey from town x. I see lots of nice places then realise its an hour drive...

Takes me about 30 seconds to get to my desk, it takes the perfumed ayatollah about 4 - 6 hours

Difficult - an hours drive from central London will get you a few miles up the road, but an hours drive from rural Cambridgeshire will get you a lot further. I'd work on a 30 mile average personally - but that doesn't take into account traffic, which can vary from place to place, and time of day/year.

For example - 30 miles from home for me, just about hits London - but I know that on a Monday morning it'd take me over an hour to get there (and that's using the M1 - theoretically as fast as you can go legally), however travelling east I can cover 2/3 that distance in around half an hour.

My commute is 32 miles each way and I get to do some bendy roads which I like very much. I'd love to drive on bendy roads all the way but that'd take too long.
The drive at 6 am in the morning and 3 pm in the afternoon takes me 45 mins each way.

I moved jobs to be closer to home (and it was only 12 miles before but through hellish traffic). Now am about 6 miles from home which during the holidays takes about 15 / 20 mins but can take twice that when the little darlings are in school . Alternatively I can cycle it door to door in about 30 mins and to be honest wouldn't want to be much further from home. My days are long enough as it is thank you very much and travel is just plain dull. Mind you I do have to travel to other sites sometimes and am not looking forward to the 5am start on Wednesday.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

The worst commute I had was many years ago Nottm to Boston in Lincs.

Now days its 3 steps from the front door to the van door and never before 9-30am to much traffic.

45 miles; 45 minutes with no traffic problems. When I am at schools though - it can be 2-3 hours to get there and the same back. A long long day.
