Hi, I am making a cake for my friends wedding this weekend (not THE wedding cake, mind!) but I have no idea how to decorate it - it is a vegan orange, chocolate and rum cake, and I have made some sloe gin truffles to put around the cake...plus a chocolate cup to put on top of the cake with more truffles and fruit (the idea is husband and wife can take the 'cup' off the top for themselves) but the cake will look a bit 'plain' without some sort of topping or decoration. I have never covered a cake before so have no idea how to go about it...any suggestions?

It will be very chocolatey and brown, so something to go with this and break it up a bit would be great...

I will post pictures when it's done of course

Sounds yummy! How about using a light coating of butter-cream to stick alternate white and dark chocolate fingers around the outside? Assuming the fingers come above the hight of the cake you could then use white and dark Maltesers to fill in the top. Or to make it more "Wedding-y" you could use all white chocolate varieties of fingers and Maltesers. A nice broad satin ribbon in either Ivory or the bridal colour would finish it off nicely.

Excellent idea, only the cake is vegan and I wish I could find dairy free chocolate fingers and the like...possibly if I had been a bit more organised (and had a lot more money!) I could have got some choc batons from hotel chocolate, but too late now

I can't think of how to cover this cake...usually its not a problem but because it is for a wedding i want it to both look and taste nice...

The only thing I know about CAAAAAAAKES is how to eat them! However, sometimes less is more - why not just put a small posy/bouquet of fresh flowers on the top, or a simple flower ring, with the cup cake in the middle. Or dust with icing sugar, and sprinkle with petals.

I'll shut up and go to bed now, I've obviously got cake overload!

Ooooh lovely her cakes look amazing, I might just have to buy some off her and give them a try, yum yum. I am thinking of frosting the top now? and having my chocolate 'cup' for the bride and groom in the center, the cake won't look so amazing when the cup is removed but at least it will taste nice. oooh im all excited about making this cake tomorrow! Think I am going to make a double layer cake too, mmmmm
