I take glucosamine as well and it seems to have a good effect, I forgot to order a new supply once and my condition got worse whilst waiting.

I don't buy it locally but get it from the Channel Islands its far far cheaper.

I was recommended Serrapet (serrapeptase) when my fell pony was lame from arthritic damage in his fore foot and hock (bear with me, 'tis relevant honest)
When a six month course cured him, I tried it too (the human kind) and it worked. I take it about six/nine months of the year and it keeps me able to bend. Can't take anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, makes me sick, literally.

        Seriously Hilly, drink white!

Glucosamine Sulphate is well worth the money. I don't take it at the moment, due to extreme lack of funds (bought a Puppy instead!), but our Chiro has said we should as we're both over 40. Also, Green-lipped Mussel extract, (sold as M@xavita and others) is fantastic - I gave it to our old dog, and swear by it. I can promise you, I will be taking both, daily, as soon as finances allow.

As for the 'cutting out the red' both my Mum, and our ex-neighbour agree whole-heartedly with this, although I cannot remember who first told me this little snippet.

Look for something called a Kneelo made of memory foam. I have it after being diagnosed with Vicar's knee - way too much praying over my seedlings, for sunshine, etc.). It was actually too much up and down with gardening.

I hadn't thought to ask myself - but actually have a stuffed right leg - old war wound - which has resulted in arthritis in both knee and ankle, and restricted movement in both (can't kneel unfortunately at all)........ last operation only six weeks ago - 15 years now of it.

Am toying with trying just about everything mentioned but thought I'd add the one thing that had helped me - a magnetic bracelet. And without getting defensive I will - I too thought it was rubbish, but bought one in desperation (not one of those £140 jobs, they are too strong and made me sick) - tried the expensive, put it through the washing machine - and bought one at a fair several years ago now. If I lose it within three days I can barely walk. I swear by it. It's light, pretty, you can wear it 24/7 and it makes it 'easier' IYKWIM.

Before making a firm decision about tomatoes, do google arthritis + tomatoes and take a look through some of the sites that come up.

It's very hard - out go most of the pasta and curry sauces, chutneys, baked beans, you have to change winter soups and stews recipes, no fresh toms in summer, but also...much less pain.

truly? Not that I'm sceptical or anything but, well, I'm sceptical...

I don't drink, so that's a head start - but tomato sauce and roast beef. Yummy! Can I just cut down?

Yes. Cutting down is better than not trying. Just reduce the amount, and frequency, and it should make a difference. I have a friend who suffers awful migraines for days if she eats so much as one chocolate. But sometimes she just can't help herself, and has to eat one.

I also recommend the Carry on Gardening site, but also have a look at Arthritis Care : Welcome to Arthritis Care where there are some good leaflets and videos you can download. The Daily Telegraph book by Arthur Klein "Arthritis the complete guide to relief using methods that really work" is worth getting from the library or cheap from Amazon. Both the book and arthritis care maintain that there is no proven link between arthritis and diet. I have rheumatoid arthritis and found that Glucosamine made me worse!

Acid-producing foods . Arthritis is not caused by eating 'acidic foods' like oranges, lemons or tomatoes. Very few foods are as acidic as our digestive juices. Foods termed 'acidic' are usually very rich in vitamin C, which is beneficial to the immune system. So avoiding these may do more harm than good.
