  • Knees are shot and can't squat

Arthur Itis is no friend of mine. Sowing and planting gets harder all the time. I just wondered what other growers with arthritis/rheumatism/back problems do to make it a bit easier? I have a robust kneeler with supports to help me get up and down and I've found that a little three legged stool helps me to get nearer the ground to sit rather than squat. If I'm sowing seed, I try to do it in modules and trays at table height. Any hints/tips/gadgets I should know about please?

proper raised beds? proper as in they really are raised up

those grab handle things will work if you're planting in modules, as will long handled mini-forks/trowels. If they're too expensive [and I think they are] ask someone nicely if they'll cut down some broom handles to the right size and fix the bits on the end for you.
If you know anyone engineering/tool minded, ask them to make you a dibber with an enormous handle and a foot rest half way up

Cut out red things from your diet; tomatoes, red wine, red meat and dark spirits all aggravate Arthur.

As well as using my kneeler I wear my pro work trousers which have pockets for knee pads and find them a God send.

Sow in modules. Use long handled bulb planter to make hole. Drop root ball in and use the bulb planter or a hoe to mound the soil up around the plant. Use boot to firm in.

Ooh that's very kind Steve, thanks. It's a bit of a way for her to travel, but I do have a spare room she could use.

I could probably manage without the wine, spirits and meat G4, but live without tomatoes? I don't think so.

I'm not feeling sorry for myself, honest folks and I'm not as decrepit as I probably sound. It's old age and poverty I suppose! All the GGs have been apprenticed Bren, but other activities seem to be more attractive! As for Himself, well, he'd think "helping" was having the whole garden paved.
