Strange text

I've been mulling this over all day. I had a text message on my mobile last night. It said "Night I love you xox".

Now, I had my phone stolen last December. I lost all my numbers. I have a current boyfriend and it's not his number.

Since my partner died 6 years ago I've had several boyfriends and (18 months ago) a stalker.

I think I remember the number but I don't know who it is. I really don't want to start something up that's dead and I really don't want to rev a stalker up.

I do realise it might be a wrong number, never the less, I'm scared.

Do I ignore it, find an out of the way phone box and call the number or what. I'm not going to call from my mobile in case it tells someone that I'm not interested in talking to that my number is still live.

Er - message of love from a number you don't know?? Hello???? Anonymous people don't profess love so just delete it. If the anonymous one is that damn keen, he'll phone properly.

It could be the stalker.

It could be an old chum that sent it to their new partner and they pressed the wrong J.

It could be random.

Either way - you are right and revving up an old stalker would not be the wisest move.

I take it that the number of your current phone is the same number as the old one? Or is it a new one?

Personally, if I had had a stalker I'd get a completely new number...esp if you know who the stalker is and they aren't linked by any friendships in any way.

Make sure you take a note of the number and then forget about it for now. If it's a genuine mistake then you wont get any more unexpected texts. If however more turn up from the same number then you will need to ask the police to look into it for you (espeically in lieu of your previous experiences with a stalker), if for no other reason than it may lead them to the original thief. Try not to worry but I'd recommend that you keep the text, if possible, in case you do need to take it further, for future reference.

BTW have you tried googling the number? You'd be suprised how many people put their phone numbers on unsecured social networking sites.

That's what I had to do ~ you can get new Sim cards for free.

Funnily enough, I hadn't seen my own stalker for a few years, and now I've seen him twice in a month, loitering in doorways in the town we used to live in.
That's what he used to do when we were together: hang around old haunts trying to bump into his other exes. I really hoped he'd taken up stamp collecting instead

You'd be suprised how many people put their phone numbers on unsecured social networking sites.

That's the next point I was going to make: don't put your phone number in your FB profile, and keep it as secure as poss, so that you don't show up if someone googles your name

another possible idea..... maybe something I would do.... is text back.

Simply say who is this and who did you want this text to be for. If and when they text back simply say you bought the phone second hand a while ago and you are not the person they were expecting............ make sure you have someone else with you to answer should they decide to call instead of text and get them to say the same thing.....

Call the number, and prefix it with 141 - it'll withhold your number then. Or set your number to withhold in the phone settings, see if you recognise the voice?

True! although i'm obviously far too masculine to ever insert a 'o' inside my 'x x'!!
I'd run the number through google, if no joy either hide your number and ring and listen, or text back, or totally ignore it!
I had a text from someone a few months ago asking if i wanted to buy a cat, i didnt know the number, or want a cat, i sent back several bad taste jokes in the very early hours, did the job!

It could be a genuine mistake. My OH has had 3 sets of these texts this year. The first was asking if he had landed safely from a trip to the USA, the second was a series of texts asking him to change a restaurant booking and the third was an invite to a christening. Each time he has not known the number and each time he has told the sender they have the wrong number and each time the sender has told him he is wrong.

I'd take the advice above as it seems sound.

It could be totally innocent and just sent to the wrong number. I've put old phone numbers into my new phone, got one 1 digit wrong and sent random txts to people I've never met before. I either don't hear anything back or, kindly, they let me know I've got the wrong number so I can change the error in my number (occasionally I've whole txt conversations as we've seen the funny side).

I know you've been unlucky in the past with a stalker, which is an awful situation but I don't think 1 txt is anything to worry about. Keep it on the phone and then if you get a stack of them from same number you know it's a problem. But just 1 txt is more likely to be a random accident.

I kept getting phone calls a while back from one of the Foreign Embassies in London wondering where I was as they were waiting for me to arrive for a wedding dress fitting and I was late! After a few voice mail messages I answered and said you've got the wrong number but it was a bit weird at the time. Most likely a wrong number.
