Forecasters Warning

Severe Gales

Areas Affected: Most of Britain and Ireland, but especially the north and west.

Valid: 22:00 Sunday 11th September - 23:00 Monday 12th September 2011

This is an Advanced Weather Warning issued by Metcheck at 19:45 on Friday 09th September 2011.

Hurricane Katia will be tracking across the Atlantic during the weekend, heading towards Britain and Ireland, and whilst she will lose hurricane status as she approaches the country, a potentially stormy spell of weather is still expected to affect parts of Britain and Ireland.

The track and intensity of this system are still subject to change, but current indications are that northern and western Britain will see severe gales or storm force winds gusting in excess of 80mph, with gales developing quite widely elsewhere for a time.

These weather conditions will result in hazardous travelling conditions and bring the risk of some damage and disruption.

This Advanced Weather Warning will be updated over the weekend as the exact track of this storm system becomes clearer..

Most of my allotment was knocked flat last weekend, I've just finished cutting back all the broken branches.
I'll now finish getting my nets in and any canes up that I can, and move my garden pots into a more sheltered site (the kitchen?)

I had peppers in flower buckets on a shelf in greenhouse. The window was open and the wind blew them all off the shelf last week!

I've battened down the hatches now though so hopefully my greenhouses and huts will survive the tail end of this hurricane.

I have seen this too and we were wind battered severely last weekend. My beans look dreadful and they were all just coming to a late bumper crop. So sick of this upturned weather. They are planted out in April next year with fleece if need be. Late Summer cannot be relied upon any more.

My borlotti beans came down too thankfully they were ready for harvest though, so no damage done.
