  • Have driven Annie

Well it was a long time coming but finally I've driven my car a proper distance and not just up the road and back.

I have to say she's amazing to drive albeit a touch noisy (chieftan tank springs to mind ) and the lack of power steering will take some getting used to but I'm sure it wont be long before I have a Popeyesque physique and then I'll be able to turn her easily. Mind you, she does have the turning circle of the QE2 which makes parking in Tesco on a busy market day, interesting - have you ever noticed how tiny the spaces are?. I gave up in the end and went to the '2 hours free' council run carpark because the outer parking spaces are much larger. It's a confidence and strength thing due to her lack of power steering - I can park the Jap truck which is a large beast as well, almost without thinking about it but that's with power assisted steering.

My first proper journey actually happened on Sunday when I drove to the shop in the next village along. Saturday I'd been at the school fair and one of the girls was telling me about how her pony had started bucking her off (although her mum now tells me it was only the once and was for a reason). So there I was on Sunday, merrily enjoying my first proper drive in my extremely noisy Annie and what should I happen upon? The girl on her pony I always slow down for riders but this time I was sorely tempted to stop completely but instead crawled passed muttering - please don't buck! Please don't spook!

Now all I need is to pass another Series Landrover or a Defender so I can join in the age old tradition of 'Wave at the other landy driver'

Great news - you can feel free to wave to MK1 Golf owners too - we also have no power steering and the turning circle of a small contient

Well every drive out will be a workout, so you'll never need to diet....what fun.
And if you are ever in the lakes on holiday we'll wave at you, Al adores Landys and is very jealous. And I'm sure my Shogun will recognise a fellow worker. Even if it has got power steering and can turn in it's own length it's too wide to squeeze in our local Morrisons parking spaces without serious wriggling.
