The debate - android thingy vs kindle - was still going strong over breakfast in our house. We started with ourselves, BH, me and a great uncle versus the visitors. This morning the very techy young ones got involved too.....and they are very much on my gadget-geek brother's side. Apparently, the more functions/buttons/ports/confusion a thing has the better.....

BH still wants a kindle, but one with a full qwerty. I'd like an Android-run tablet. I like the thought that I can be sneakily reading books whilst supposedly working! (And looking like I'm working and concentrating hard....)

functions/buttons/ports/ = more things to go wrong!

Will you really use all the extra thingamybobs anyway? I got talked into getting an all singing all dancing phone, still only use the thing for texts and calls.

Well I'm so glad that people are enjoying their kindles. I love mine -it's always within reach. The little anthology I edited and which Zazzen so kindly reviewed is still selling well. You can get a full evening's reading for 86p. Lots of books by Indie authors are at that price or very little more too. I have read little else but independently published work in the last 6 months. These people are in the main self publishing not because they are rubbish but because their work doesn't fit into a genre or category that the big publishers can market. They transcende categories and I spend a lot of my time at the moment proof reading for them and helping to publicise their work.
I always read loads and thought I'd never want anything but a paper (or dead-tree) book. I now live with my kindle attached! I read so much more.

Let me know how you get on with it Fi, my brother bought me a case but it's the wrong size for my device and I was wondering what the light ones where like.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Will do when I sort the bank out. They declined the purchase because it is outside my normal spending pattern! Can't resubmit the order online, have to phone the support team, and they are shut grrrrrr

Bit disappointed that the 'Daily Deal' has stopped. I tried quite a few new authors for 99p, so I'm hoping that it will return after the new years sale is over with.

Some of my OU friends started a Facebook group for Kindle users. Some of it is people talking about how to get coursebooks onto the Kindle, but I try and post the Daily Deal in there and there are other discussions. If anyone fancies it, just request to join

                      Hiya Jules,
Last Christmas I was given an Android tablet instead of the Kindle I wanted...I hated it, my Software Engineer husband hated it, there were tears and then a mutual agreement to send the darn thing back and get a Kindle.
It wasn't just a tantrum, honest . My OH had loaded some books on to the tablet for me, but the interface was hard to use, the wifi was rubbish (unless you sat right next to the box!), and I found it really awkward to hold.
I have a G3, Qwerty keyboard Kindle now, and its awesome.
It fits in the pocket of my big fluffy dressing gown
Its easy to read, the screen is clear and there is no glare. It's light and easy to hold even when lying on your side in bed (try that with a tablet PC!).
...And we used the G3 functionality to Gooooogle stuff when we were on holiday without laptops and internet .

If you want a tablet, get a tablet, but if you want a device dedicated and designed for reading books, you really won't regret getting a Kindle.

Humour me if you will. I quite fancy a Kindle to read books, what is the purpose of the keyboard? Keep it simple please.

You can make notes on pages with it. Use it to search for new books online (if you've got the G3 version). I think you can get away without it, and just manage/ order books on your computer if you'd prefer, but I do find it quite handy

The new Kindle without keyboard, has a virtual keyboard which you navigate via the 4-way controller at the bottom. It sounds like a faff, but actually it isn't that bad at all. And, you can search and buy from the Kindle Store on all Kindles, not just the 3G one - you just have to be within range of a wireless signal

Thanks Sarz, duly noted especially as it would save about £50
