I had mine on last month

I fired up the oil heater for my bedroom in the cold and windy (and single glazed!!) attic about a week ago, which is late for me. I get awfully cold very easily (jumpers in thailand etc) and have poor circulation so my perception, and reaction to, cold is very different from most. OH is quite often happy sat in a t-shirt whilst I'm curled up under a blanket with socks and jumper on. Electric bills last winter were £900 + per quarter (between 6), but with it gone up about 10-15% I think it will push the £1000 barrier.

Wrap up warm everyone, its gonna be a cold one tonight! (says she with the oil heater, hot chocolate and dressing gown)

Ours is just on the thermostat, set to about 17c. If it gets colder than that, it comes on. Over the summer it gets turned down to 15c but it's never 'off' altogether. Can't see the point in saying 'Well, it's only [whatever month], it's too early' with the weather changing as much as it has in recent years. If it's cold, it's cold. And if it's boiling hot in February and March, I'm not going to keep the heating ON because it's 'still winter'...

Too expensive, not turning it on until it gets down to 16c in the kitchen (which is where the parrot sleeps)

I am wearing my refugee outfit in my sewing room: clothes, plus fleecy beast (dressing gown) on top and a scarf on my head. Fingerless gloves, permanent cup of hot chocky

Last night I was very much "oh we should only doing washing machine at night as its cheaper etc. etc.

But now I have given up, and we just do stuff whenever, I would rather live in comfort than watch the penny's, I know that's not an option for everyone, but I have got to a point where I feel might as well enjoy life/life's comforts while we can.

Having found out that we somehow used more gas than was estimated between June and September(that was just for heating the water),I don't know when I'll dare to turn mine on....lots of layers,blankets and warming foods will have to suffice here for at least another few weeks

My wife is the same, I brought her one of them snuggle blankets or whatever you call them, and she uses it all the time, I guess women feel the cold more, she always has a million extra layers on than me. lol

Ours doesnt go on until Novemeber, no matter how cold it gets.....far too expensive to waste, esp when you can wear slippers, jumpers and wrap blankets around yourself, and use a hot water bottle at night!!

We did put the heating on. Reluctantly. Then we over heated and turned it off again. So, we lit all the candles in the livingroom for a few evenings (love candles......) and that took the edge off. Last night, we caved in and bought coal for the fire and it was so cosy.

Our combined fuel bill in this old house with six of us is, on average, £200 a month, so we are definitely in no rush to add to that.

Like other Grapes, I can be absolutely freezing whilst Mr OWG is in shorts and t-shirt.

I routinely wear 2 pairs of socks, plus woolly slippers, fleece-type tracky pants, long sleeve tshirt, hoody and my Slanket (blanket with sleeves!) when the heating is on, and I'm still really, really cold....

That's what we do - works very well. It's been coming on the last couple of days in the mornings but not so much in the evenings and if it warms up it just won't come on. It's only set to 17 deg for about an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening in the week and a bit more at weekends though as we're usually out / doing things other than that.
