A Right Carve Up

Youngest Golden Girl forgot she had pumpkin carving at school today, so her daddy rushed with her to Tesco at 7.30 this morning to get a pumpkin. She went into school with a big pumpkin and a big smile on her face.
Daughter went to collect her this afternoon and she came out of school with no pumpkin and looking very sad, as did a few of her friends, also pumpkinless. When questioned, she said that only half of the class had taken pumpkins into school and so all the names were put into a hat to decide who would carve the ones they had. Granddaughter was not drawn out, so despite having taken a pumpkin, she was not allowed to carve one and another child who hadn't brought one, carved it and was allowed to take it home!

Granddaughter is just 9 and is a very generous, sharing kind of girl, but she just couldn't understand why she wasn't allowed to do it. This happened to 4 of the children, one of them a boy, who cried!

That is truly disgraceful behaviour on the part of the school staff. How do you even try to explain that as being 'fair'? I hope there's a queue of complaints at the Head's door tomorrow. Unbelievable.

No way!! That's outrageous! The pumpkin-less kids should have done something else...like draw/paint a pumpkin instead. Betcha they wouldn't forget next time they had to bring something from home!

Sorry I rarely criticise school as I think my daughter needs to respect it whatever I think as she has to go there, but Id be complaining BIG TIME. I understand lots of parents cant be bothered and thats not the kids fault. I also understand lots of parents cant afford to bring pumpkins here, cakes there and raffle prizes the other and THATS not the kids fault either. However that said, the fact other parents cannot or will not provide for their kids is not your grandchilds fault. Ive often struggled to send my child in with the necessary item for school, even going without something myself to do so, or telling her it is instead of sweets or a treat through necessity. Had this happened to me and my daughter hadnt benefited I would be sending a very very stiff letter of complaint pointing out their actions show little incentive for parents to contribute in future. Ironically most of the children would probably have shared willingly with the carving had they been given the option to volunteer. What a stupid stupid teacher....and a very hard lesson for some kids that for the providers and workers of the world a constant frustration is that you will often be forced by the powers that be to do without in order to provide for those who cannot (fine) or will not (not fine) provide for themselves.x

As a Child, I was taught that we have to be fair, and honest and just. Stupidly, I grew up believing that Adults behaved that way.

Reality sucks!
