  • Winter tyres

I know it seems a bit early, but the weather is turning and I'd like to know my fellow grapes are as safe and prepared as they can be.

If you haven't yet replaced your tyres, or don't already have all season tyres on your car, might be worth thinking about them soon.

I've just booked mine, and based on last years' anecdotal evidence there's a the possibility of a shortage if you don't get in quick.

Strong winter tyre demand means shortage, despite increased production

I know a few folk who swapped over last year and said the difference is astounding.

Be safe - and if you don't need to drive, don't.

Good point there Wayne, another thing that will probably suffer stock shortage will be car "snow socks",I jest you not they do exist & they do work.

A mate had a pair delivered to me last year as deffo needed 4WD to get to his house,I duly delivered & fitted them onto his Passat, then took it for a drive, the difference was phenomenal, wheelspin was almost impossible.
Easy to fit & remove just remember to remove as soon as you get to dry tarmac

Check Eblag any or all of ... snow socks/car snow socks/tyre snow socks

Good advice Wayne. We bought winter tyres the year before last and, as you say, the difference is staggering. There were days last year when we couldn't have managed to get to the shops without them and there were some years before we had them when this was actually the case
I can not speak highly enough of them and I would urge anyone who can afford them to get some. I know that it seems like a lot of money but, when the summer tyres are not being used, they are not wearing down so, you don't get any less for your money, if you know what I mean.

ps, I don't work for Michelin, I just think that they are a brilliant idea

I have some in my boot, but when the snow's as sporadic as it has been I feel easier with "all season" tyres on. I can add to the assurance.

Last year we were at Sherwood Centre Parcs under 2ft of snow. The staff where helping dig people out of their car park spaces when it came to leaving day. Lots of cars getting stuck. I looped my snow socks over the top of the tyres, rolled back a bit and I was off. Took them off straight after I got out of the car park as I don't want them to wear out too quickly.

We're looking into them for Himself's car (last year's backward slide down a Sussex hill was terrifying)

I've heard a rumour that you need to inform your insurance company, as this could be seen as an upgrade? Is that bunkum?

I like the look of those, I'm going to let Himself take a look. When it snows here, although we are only yards from a main road, we can't get off the side road and I have to have time off work.

Seems like a good enough reason NOT to get them if you ask me

I think it's bunkum, but wouldn't surprise me if unscrupulous insurers tried it on.

Well yes Scarey I agree, but not when I have run out of annual leave and I have to take it unpaid

A stranger once asked a friend of ours to help to push his car. His reply was "No chance mate, I mean, would you offer me a lift if it was raining?"
