..................and hence the whole weight of the upper floor.
Looks a damm sight better than a RSJ though, you have to admit!

As somebody who used to do structural design that doesn't look that big for what it has to do. Was expecting a beefy RSJ.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
We do a lot of UIB's, its nice to see a tidy lump of wood. If its not too much trouble do you think I could borrow the sunshine in your picture for tomorrow, its a bit damp here.
I'll bet a piece of timber like that cost a pretty penny...go on, who thinks three figures, who thinks four ?
Maybe I'm being obtuse here, but...they need to remove the old one presumably, to replace it with the new one. There must be an old one, or the second floor would have fallen down, yes ? (You can see where I'm going here, can't you.)
So having removed the old one, while they are putting the new one in, what is holding the bl***y house up ??

Head-hunted member of the Nutter's Club - can I get my cranium back please ?
When we had a bay window taken off the back of the house (to accommodate the conservatory ) they had to take a big oak lintel out which was three pieces of timber strapped together.. I went upstairs to the bedroom and could see daylight above the skirting board, reckon there was about three header bricks holding it up . Old house not cavity wall.... Never seen builders work so fast

The beam is 300x300 and nearly 5metres long! He already has two oversized RSJ's going in for a single storey cavity wall. Real over kill I think. Ive been in the building game for 15 years and only ever seen a beam like that used on a huge bridge! It is a lovely bit of wood though. The price was about £500 which I dont think is that bad.
