One way to help awful winter toms is a salsa recipe from Ainsley Harriott. Char-grill some plum toms and mix with chopped coriander, mint, red onion, chilli, a little oil and lemon juice, seasoning. It really livlies up a steak or any grilled meat.

I have 4 left in the fridge to have me steak this weekend.
I picked all the toms, chillies and peppers last week (and cleaned out the g/house while no baby sitting duties) then made several jars of hot and spicy pasta sauce to last me the winter out.
I do miss realy fresh toms.

Think I'd sooner go without than eat tasteless ones, its pity you can't try them in the shops before you commit to buying.

I smell them first. If they don't smell remotely tomato-ish they're left. Get some funny looks mind, especially sniffing the plastic wrapped ones. But I do the same with Hot Cross buns too so I'm used to it..

I've still got some Black cherries coming along in the g/house, which may just get to ripen.
Then I'll be buying them, as some of the on vine cherry toms are not too bad, when I really fancy a salad...

But the homegrown tom season is all too short, innit?

I'm glad someone else smells toms. Mr Pots thinks its weird so he usually walks off pretending he's not with me

I, too, am a Tommy-smeller. Do I qualify for counselling?

the last of the cherries are ripening on the windowsil and i just made a batch of cherry tom passata, to join the other jars made this year.
I don't tend to east salady salads in the winter anyway, more like beetroot and noodles and cottage cheese and things like that. You can chuck anything in a bowl, put oil and vinegar with it and call it salad
