Council tax query..............

I intend contacting the local council about my query but thought I would put it by you lot first?

I have bought a house which I am renovating. I am not living in this house. I have had a one year Council tax free period for major renovations (which are not yet complete) and have now dropped onto paying half rates.

My son is moving house and would like to store his surplus furniture in one room of my house. Will this mean I will have to pay full council tax?
He has offered to pay the difference which is less than paying for storage, but I just wondered whether I would need to?
Failing any tangible advice, I intend contacting the Council on Monday as he hopes to move some of his furniture in on Wed/Thur.

The main categories of properties are exempt from paying Council Tax are shown below.
Occupied Properties
■Properties occupied entirely by students, or is only occupied by students as term-time accommodation and student halls of residence.
■Properties occupied by one person, classed as Severely Mentally Impaired (SMI) or a property totally occupied by persons who are SMI.
■Properties owned by the Secretary of State for Defence and held as accommodation for armed forces.
■Properties where the person who would be liable is a member of a visiting force.
■Properties where the only people living there are under 18.
■Properties where the only people living there are diplomats and those working for certain international organisations.
■Granny flats.

When I lived on my own I got a 25% discount... I thought that was across all councils but could be mistaken

3 years ago Newcastle CC gave me only 6 months exemption on a house I was selling on the condition all the furniture was removed. So I moved my furniture into the ground floor of the new house whilst I decorated the bedrooms. The new one had already had it's 6 months exemption whilst the previous owner was selling it and as the exemption is given to the property, not the owner IYSWIM, I moved PDQ.

Luckily I sold the first one just within the 6 months.

A longer exemption was only given if the house was uninhabitable; no boiler or kitchen for example.

Yup, I think that 3 years ago they must have 'consulted' and then decided.

After my 6 months' exemption, there was no discount offered to me.

The house is in the Durham County Council area. I have no kitchen, boiler,heating,bath, hand basin,only partial electrics. and a stand pipe in the corner for cold water!

I dont see why you need to say anything, the house is clearly not inhabitable because of the missing amenities, no one is actually planing to stay there - it's just being used for temporary storage. I don't see why having a few boxes and bits of furniture would make any difference to the council tax or be their business tbh.

take it in covered up,you can lay claim it's building materials,if anyone look through the windows the goods will not be visible,or stick em upstairs and plant some building things down,twill be only locals that will snitch,and like others have said,fain all inocence ,

I would be less concerned about the council tax, and more concerned that you had adequate household insurance to cover what's being left there.
