Profile pictures?

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, but I'm having trouble trying to upload a profile picture- I've got one that's under maximum size, both file size and pixel numbers, but I just get the error message 'cannot upload file'. I tried the same picture in both .gif and .jpg, but no luck.
Any suggestions? I's confused.
