When I had an allotment I kept a form of accounts - how much have I spent on the allotment - seeds. rent, tools etc and what is the nominal value of the produce that I have grown, swapped, sold and so on. This was very useful as it proved that, if I did not put any price on the time spent, I could grow crops that were worth far more than I spent.
I wondered whether anyone else puts a monetary value on their gardening. This, of course, ignores the value of pleasure, exercise, company, quality of food, and so forth.

Thanks Scarlet for the posting of Mrs Dobby's accounts. Just what I've tried doing only Mrs Dobby is far more productive than I ever was. Interesting reading!!

I started off the year with good intentions of keeping account but then it all went pear shaped cos I started to forget to weigh stuff.... but as we haven't had to buy hardly any fruit and veg yet I reckon its value is priceless....

If I'm being honest, I want to declare an amnesty on myself for spending so much money on seeds recently!. So I intend starting with a clean slate on January 1st, calling all the seeds I have "Stock in hand"
and taking it from there. I don't really know why I have to fudge the figures since I know the truth, but it does mean that I can keep buying seeds until 31st December and they won't count in the reckoning!

I'm probably in the same boat - but if you took on another hobby you would throw money at that and wouldn't get your veg in return. It's surprising how much money a weekly supply of veg costs

How much does a packet of ciggies cost these days? About £7. And what do you get for that - nothing healthy. So why am I worrying, I don't smoke. Think how much more I can spend on seeds without a conscience. Yippeee - pass the seed catalogues.
