Can't believe people still pay for AV software

My personal choice:

Anti Virus - Avast Free Edition
Firewall - Comodo Firewall Free Edition
Malware - Malwarebytes Free Edition
Spyware - Superspyware Free Edition

Don't install more than one of each type of protection and you'll be fine. Remove any existing protection before installing the new stuff. Always check for updates before using the scanning software.

Avast,Mcaffee and Norton all slow my pooter too much!

I have Security Essentials on in the background with no slowing.
I run Malwarebytes,Ccleaner and Eusing registry cleaner 'now and again' and run AVG PC Tune up once a week!

I've used AVG for a while now. Recently I upgraded to the paid-for version (after a month of 'free trial') it seems to be doing a good job, as far as I can tell.

I have this too. A computer geek friend told me it's light on the resources of your computer and if you use Microsoft (Not a Mac person) then it's totally compatible. No problems so far, and I like the price Snadger.

Avast, avast, Avast, avast! I've been using that for nearly 2 years now, and had no virus problems at all. AVG on the OH's computer was breached twice in the same time. He's switched to Avast too now

Avast does slow the computer down slightly when it's updating, but it's only for a couple of minutes, and I think it's well worth it.

I use Norton and find it very intrusive but haven't really explored the alternatives. Hadn't thought about it slowing the computer down just thought it was jolly old Vista. One son has Norton on his laptop and does complain about freezing etc and other son has Avast and seems to have no problems. Not a true comparison I know but has given me food for thought. My school laptop has McAfee which I never notice is on there but have had no virus problems either.

If you have a properly set up router you have a hardware firewall which should be enough but most people that I know also use a software one. Comodo gets top rating by most people but there are other very good ones.

The paid-for version of AVG includes a firewall, and all the other stuff.

yup. my router's firewall is great for port protection etc but it doesn't have any protection over connections coming in on open ports. comodo will pop up to alert you that an incoming connection has been detected and you have to acknowledge it and decide if its friendly or not. if you haven't installed anything recently and the pc is idle when the connection comes in then chances are its a bad one.

comodo comes with "geekbuddy" which is like a live helpdesk and you can even use comodo's DNS for handling your connections although as a gamer I don't use it.

quick note on using all in one protection. if you gain a nasty on the pc it can shut down said protection. if you have everything from one product then it only has to break down one piece of software.

for that very reason I use single protection software.
