Whitby, anybody been?

I have rather a large birthday coming up. We have decided to go to Whitby, stay the night and come home the next day.

has anyone been?, where would you stay? I did have a quick look and found a pub called the Duke of York right on the harbour which looked ok.

Whitby is fab Minskey, we've been loads of times, but haven't stayed overnight. We used to base ourselves in Scarborough and do little excursions inland and on the coast.

gotta love whitby, some great value b&b's check out the abbey and if you like kippers search out Fortunes oak smaked kipper shed and shop, go left at the bottom of the abbey steps instead of going up
follow your nose there the best........ :-)

Apart from the hills, i love Whitby. We stayed on a farm 2 miles inland from Sandsend, near Whitby, and had a great time. A real good sit-down fish and chip shop right on the harbour opposite the big Co-op.

We stayed at the DoY a few years ago. It looks like it's been done up a bit!

We had a room on the ground floor( you can see the patio doors on their site.)
Not as private as I'd have liked

Upstairs room look nice though!
Good location. (I think there is no parking on the street- so you need to drop your bags off and then park....may be different now)

We ate at the Magpie cafe- just got there in time- there was a massive queue not long afterwards- fantastic fish food!

Since i retired early this year, we spend as often as possible in Scarborough, we hire a Caravan for for as long as we are there. Then travel all along the Coast-line as far as we need too, then back to base.
My wife loves the shopping, me i love that coast for it's variability of Gulls
So thats 2 very happy people.

If you can push to two nights you could try the Hotels Whitby UK, Goathland Hotel, Yorkshire – Mallyan Spout Hotel at Goathland near Whitby. Lovely hotel and the food is gorgeous. (Its where they filmed Heartbeat!)

I believe you can also catch a steam train from there to Whitby, taking in the stunning scenery.

Family just down the road from Whitby - been loads of times

Check out the shops that sell jet.
The Magpie for fish and chips - gets fab ratings in papers - even by other chefs! its a black and white building.
Abbey - good but loads of steps up
Very interesting geology - harbour area
Good for ammonite hunting on the beach (rocky side) - found a perfect fossilised pigs tooth just lying on beach (sandy bit) once. Watch the tides though.
Fortunes kippers are FANTASTIC!!! yum yum yum

Quite a few Goths gather at Whitby but they are fine - so no worries there

I like Whitby - a little 'kiss me quick hat' kinda area but good fun.

I have a Yorkshire man and we visit Whitby a lot. Magpie has best fish and chips around using beer batter and beef dripping for frying - not one for vegetarians. They have sit down restaurant as do most Yorkshire chippies. They make their own tartare sauce. Bread and butter is obligatory! Take out is cheaper if on budget - food served is same quality. There are some very posh restaurants serving local catch of the day, lobster, etc. Whitby is the Yorkshire Padstow. Can't remember name but seating was royal blue, white walls - had a fab meal there - I had lobster, served and cooked well (for a change). For an island I am surprised how hard it is to get good fish - but in Whitby you can.
The harbour area facing the abbey has many good places. The abbey is a stiff climb up so drive if faint hearted. It was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, so you will find a few tacky goth shops.
It's hard to find a bad restaurant in Whitby - you'd have to be very unlucky. The Yorkshire folk like their grub
My children stayed on a field trip three years running at the Cliff House Hotel on the cliff edge side of Whitby. If you want p and q then that's the side to go to. Faces the sea, reasonably priced, clean, decent breakfasts. There are lots of hotels set in old Georgian houses. All B and B rates. At this time of year you could just turn up and take your pick. You will require your car up the hill though. Many pub hotels along the seafront. Robin Hoods bay is worth a visit too. There is a pub/hotel on the clifftop there - again name escapes me.
Check out best butcher with own abbatoir for best pork pies in UK - Tom Parker Bowles. They really are too. Knock Meltons into a cocked hat. Sausages were cracking too and we are used to Peter Coates ones...

Robin Hoods Bay a few miles out of Whitby is the Grosvenor hotel.
