There was a bit of a discussion going on this morning on the BBC about how and whether we say "thank you". "Thank you very much indeed" is considered by some as long winded, whilst "ta" is inappropriate in some situations. Personally, I use the words "thank you". Maybe "nice one" is taking over? The one I don't like is "cheers m'dears"

I tend to abbreviate to thanks; and also use cheers and nice one depending who im thanking!

There were some younger people who thought that "cool" was a replacement. Don't like that.

I always say either Thanks or Thank you depending on the situation. I tend to write 'nice one' or 'cool' rather than say it.

I say 'Ta' with friends and family but also say 'Thank You', or even 'Thanks very much' with strangers, or in a more formal setting.

Not many people seem to respond with 'you're welcome' anymore......................

I normally say 'Thank you', just because I'm one of those people who can say 'thanks' and the voice doesn't quite kick in!! Two syllables give me a fighting chance of actually getting a sound out!

"Thank you" (or variants) refers to what someone has done that is to your advantage. Phrases like "cool" or "nice one" signify admiration/appreciation but without implying gratitude.
"Cheers" can only be a proper 'thank you' for something to consume (strictly a drink, but could be stretched to food), although where 'ta' would do, it's not too bad.
Whether you use "Ta", "Thanks", "Thank you" or even longer phrases is really down to context and how well you now the person you are thanking.

I'm a Thanks, Thank you, Thank you very much or Many thanks, person. In Cardiff (Kairdiff) Taaaa, sounds appalling and I would only use it as a send-up. BUT anything is better than being ignored!
