I say and write 'thanks' it feels right to me, around some here people say "thanks m'duck" but that just makes me want to laugh.

Life here is so much slower. There's time to say 'Thank you'- followed by 'That's very kind of you' and then-( with a big smile )make eye contact.
You can see their faces light up.
It only takes a few seconds more- but the French have taught me that 'manners' are top priority ....and it's very rewarding .

In the rush of the UK- I still say 'Thank you' - or 'Q' ( to a family member)

My usual is thankyou or thanks . Cheers is usuially related to drinks ......of course there's always the murky buckets way ..........

We usually get 'cheers mate' round here... but I'm a bit more formal than that.

Depends on the situation and who I'm talking to but rarely say Ta. My beloved Grandma brought me up to think of Ta as rude lazy slang. Even my little 'un got taught Thank you from the earliest age. 'Fan ooo' was so cute. I tend so say 'No problem' 'D'nada' or 'You're welcome' in response to a Thanks. I always learn 'Please' and 'Thank you' in the local language of the country I'm visiting too. Goes a very long way

Re the thanks thing, will usually say thanks, thank you, sometimes ta if texting etc but never thanx (does that really save THAT much time?), cool, tidy or any of those types (what's that got to do with gratitude?). Cheers mate also annoys me when said by total strangers, you're not my mate so stop being matey and pretending you are, makes no sense.
