Not going into the cost of Professional Indemnity Insurance for Surveyors, but it has to be paid for another 10 years after retiring (gets a bit less each year, but still serious money!) as well as membership of RICS, I believe now £500 a year.

You are damn right there. Why did they change the name, money I bet!
the government thought it would be to confusing for the general public and wanted to
make it more clear (could a corgi registered joiner work on gas) ?
so they moved to something more simple gas safe

The contract to run the gas register came up for renewal. CORGI (a private company) lost the contract but refused to release the CORGI logo. The government came up with Gas Safe and registered it as a Trade Mark, hence the TM on the new logo. In future if the contract to run the register goes to a new company then the Gas Safe logo goes with it.

Sat patting myself on the back on Friday I have got my public liability & tool insurance down to £337-90 for the same cover.
Bugger me an e-mail arrives from Gas Safe telling me I have until April next year to take a CPA1 assessment to prove I can use a flue gas analyzer only been using one for 15 years. Another £160-00p
down the drain you just can't win.

one of the last jobs I did the plumber used his gas flue analyzer and filled the service book in with all the readings and self certificated the boiler as safe
then about a week later I got a call to go back because the extractor stopped working and the customer was concerned about of the amount of water coming out of the extractor ?
I had to fit a new extractor new wall units and then do the plumbers job
and put back the test bung back onto the flue pipe
the boiler had been discharging flue gases into the kitchen for a week
So colin when you do your assessment don't forget screw the bung back on
Another gas safe plumber fitted a triton shower with a low voltage key pad with a six core alarm type
cable it was marked blue to one red to two etc
After the shower was fitted it would not work and the plumber left telling the customer to phone triton
to fix it
triton wanted £150 if it was installation error
the customer asked me to look
The low voltage wiring was right at both ends the power supply was correct
Then I found the problem
He had fitted the low voltage wires without stripping the end
So your £ 160 is well spent if it weeds out the numptysLast edited by green thing; 06-12-2011, 09:54 AM.

The plumber that fitted our new boiler caused us grief for weeks afterwards. We had pressure dropping all the time, couldn't find a leak.
Called him back twice, got his dad instead (another plumber) who couldn't find a leak. Fobbed the little blonde wife off with 'it'll be under the house, you'll never find it'.
I thought, funny, it never leaked until you came in, and you never went under the house.
Little One found the leak accidentally: behind the sofa the carpet was all wet. He'd managed to burn a hole in the new pipe he'd put in.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

GT one of the problems is that Joe average thinks that if a person is Gas Safe registered they are good at what they do. Where as all it really means is that they have passed an assessment in a class room situation, thats one of the reasons I am a staunch advocate of the true apprenticeship route. Having said that we have people in all professions who do not apply what they have been taught when actually on the job
