I'm afraid we were guilty of lighting a bonfire on the LAST sunny day we had...it was the only day off that mother had, and there was a huge pile of bramble prunings to burn. It was the only day she to do it, but we did wait until mid afternoon. I agree that it's anti-social if its really smoky, but then nobody complains about BBQs do they?
Me, I've given up bonfires, even though I love them. I only light one in November now.

Think we're the annoying neighbours at the moment, we're having an extension built and it's making a lot of dust and I have a sneaking feeling that they have the radio on very loud when we're not there. The first week the builders were there they managed to chop down next door's clematus so I need to buy them a new one when it's all finished. Bit embarrased about that but it was too late when I found out!

What a shame Seasprout. I think some people just don't think about the impact their behaviour has on other people. And there are a few who just don't care. We're very lucky and have very responsible neighbours. I hope you will get other sunshine days to enjoy.

Sorry to hear that seasprout! I know I'm being a grumpy old woman now, but one of our neighbours has a couple of children, who seem to invite lots of their friends round to make as much noise as possible in the garden - just when I want to potter around my back garden and enjoy the sunshine and er, the peace and quiet!

We are very lucky with our neighbours. Four of us share an entry, so the back gardens (yards) are connected and we all manage to get on really well.

Two doors down have a large dog - Charlie, who is a wonderful guard dog when he's in the garden and greets everyone, just wanting to say 'Hello'. their little girl is 3 years old and quite a character too.
Next door to them is a new neighbour, single mum with little boy also three years old and another character. Because their garden is not closed off, he toddles round to our house to visit the cats, trots in and asks 'where are they?' and is absolutely charming.
Our immediate neighbour is another single mum with a 10 year old boy (who is now into kicking a ball against the wall, but it won't last forever). she feeds our cats when we go away if No 1 son is not available.
We help each other with bins and chopping trees down, it's nice. Good people across the road too, so it's friendly here.

Our only problem is the neightbour on the other side of us, who has left her garden full of carp for a couple of years, but has finally cleaned it and no longer lets her two dogs out at all, so the dog mess is gone too. She only come out after dark and makes very little noise, so we can't complain really.

Oh dear, Max and I had a fire going on Sunday afternoon and yesterday too!! However, all burning was in a garden brazier thingy and was hot enough not to smoke much. We had checked that nobody had washing out before we lit though. With our garden being totally enclosed the only way we can get rid of brambles and other big wood waste is to get burning. Wasn't much smell of a fire at all unless you were putting the bits into the brazier.

Can you believe it.. today (Monday) they are at it again..! Another fire, smoke everywhere.

It looks like according to my councils website they are not annoying enough
to be classed as a nuisance. Quote from my council website.."Being in a Smoke control area (which we do) does not forbid garden bonfires.! So Whats the point.!!

Depends on your local byelaws, Squirrel. We actually have more problems with summertime barbequeues and fireworks than we do with bonfires. How people actually eat food that has been cooked on the fires I can smell round here on summer weekends beats me. I'm amazed they don't get food poisoning. The barbies are so hot and smoky the food must be burnt on the outside and raw inside.

My neighbours have today planted a huge willow of some sort on the other side of the fence from my pond and planted two apple trees right next to it. When fully grown I have a feeling that they are going to shade at least 1\3 of my garden. I hate to think what its going to do to my little pond. I feel they have just done this for spite they could have planted the trees along the back of their garden and it wouldnt have bothered any one. Unfortunately they are totally unaproachable so I dont know what to do about it.
