I've been advised by my neurologist and my GP that I should consider giving up teaching due to an injury received in an accident 3 years ago, the symptoms of which are exacerbated by anxiety and stress. So, in this time of economic recession, what would you consider a suitable career move for a 50 plus woman who is the sole breadwinner in the family, and still has a mortgage to pay off? Beats me what I could do, so suggestions, realistic or funny (to cheer me up), gratefully received.

Since you can't live without a garden, make gardening your life! I don't know what your special skills are in the gardening line but build on those. Advise, teach, train, design, garden for others, grow plants for sale - these are just random thoughts! Perhaps find a part time job to bring in enough for the mortgage and your other commitments and spend the rest of your time doing whatever you enjoy. Be happy!!Comment

Since you have experience in teaching maybe you could use your gardening skills in schools showing pupils and other teachers how to grow their own. Also perhaps in some theraputic way for people with learning difficulties or dissabilities of some kind.
Given the economic crisis the more people that have the ability to grow food the better.
Other than that kock on the door of Number 10 and tell PM his garden has been seconded for the good of the nation and plant some money trees!Comment

Had you thought about going part- time Barley Sugar? I think that would be a preferable option to giving up totally and starting something new - which would in itself be a stressful move. That way you would only take a relatively small drop in income. And of course you do have to consider your pension (as we all are these days).Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?Comment

I don't know what to suggest to you BS, but I sympathise with your position. I too am the sole earner in our partnership and have the mortgage to pay. I hope you find something with no stress and the same amount of money. Good luck
