Hi BVP, so far we've personally met up with YoanBob (Yo came over for a brew and piece of cake before xmas, and both Yo and Bob came over for a barbeque last night), we had a great lunch with PW & Piglette, (and took in a great visit to their garden and plots too), have met LJ's OH (he works in a glass place near here) and have plans to meet up with other grapes at the Malvern Show and whilst participating in a 'digging day' at YoanBob's (with other grapes as their wedding prezzie!), plus we've plans to meet up with a few others for a barbeque here as soon as we get the time and weather!

So, yes, some of us do get to meet other grapes, and so far its been nothing but great to meet them! We took YoanBob down to our plot last night for a quick looksee (and to grab some radishes for the salad and some rhubarb for a friend), it was good to see others reactions, especially when they were such nice comments!

My friends think that gardening and growing things is for pensioners and boring people, so you can imagine the amount of stick that I get. Its refreshing to come on to the grapevine site and feel like you fit in.

Hear hear. Our site is getting younger and more varied...not quite multi-cultural yet (it's still Suffolk), but we have 50% women; children helping; younger men; even (whisper it...) gay people. And it's ruddy brilliant! The flat-cap brigade & their prejudices are being driven out. PS. Some of our loveliest members are retired old men, but they are young-at-heart, helpful and generous to everyone else. Such a lively mix of people from diff.backgrounds with diff. ideas ... our Site is now as much a social club as an allotment site, and it is thriving. We are even beginning to let the unused-4-years plots because people are begging for plots here.

The allotments round our way dont seem to be very good. There are no houses near by and your not allowed to erect your own shed or greenhouse. You get to store your tools in a communal shed which the council put up, bt its a tip and not very secure. The rent is £28 a year which Im not sure if thats good or bad. I know one of the old guys who works an allotment there and he says that the vandalism is pretty bad too. I didnt bother taking a plot, I would be devastated if I put in all the work and someone destroyed it. I'm lucky though, 'cause I have my garden and I manage to sqeeze everything in somehow.

I wish more members would post. Even if they don't start new threads, please come in with posts on existing threads. We can all learn from each other, and a lot of the time it is good just to have a chat and a laugh with like minded people. Please everyone, don't just look - join in.

Hi everyone, I'm a new member so I thought I would introduce myself, hope this is the right place to do it.
I've had my plot at Walsall Road Allotments in Birmingham for 6 years and I love it! It isn't only the fact that I have room to grow everything I want to, it's also that I feel I am part of a community of (mostly) like-minded people. I really like it when people come over to my plot to see what I am growing - that doesn't happen when you are in your back garden at home! Every day at midday we make drinks in our meeting room and people gather for a chat or a game of darts. We are a very multi-cultural group and it is interesting to hear about how gardening is done in other countries. I'm looking forward to being a member of this forum and learning from other people's experience.
