Growing up in a damp terrace house, two up, two down, outside loo, tin bath in front of the coal fire in the living room. Only one electric power point in the house - with multiple adapters. You had to choose what you wanted to run and do without the rest. No fridge until I was about 12 - no TV either until my brother was seriously ill and my parents scrimped together enough to buy a huge TV with a tiny screen. One channel, colour not an option.
But we always had enough food to eat, clean clothes and shoes and we had a really happy home. I wouldn't swap my childhood for one in an all modcons house these days.

      A slightly lateral thought though......

Hats off to the North Sea trawler me who go out to catch our fish. After my experiences of a force 9-10 channel crossing yesterday- I'll NEVER complain about the cost of fish ever - again.
      Very humbling.

up until two years ago we lived in a house with 2 fires down stairs, one which drew faster than the other so we regularly had a living room filled with smoke & ash, single glazing, and a leaking roof thanks to an as*hole of a landlord. The house was so cold we discovered the toothpaste can freeze and had to send the dort to her Grandmas for baths because it was just too cold for her. Ice inside was a part of every day life during winter and I had to keep the butter in the airing cupboard to be able to use it - I thought I'd left all that behind as a child. It was miserable and I hated pretty much every second during the winter and am sure it contributed to the break down of my marriage. Totally adored it during the summer, the view/light/clarity were totally sublime for me.
