Who are your civilian, unpaid Heroes? Mine are the RNLI. God Bless them. I hate being on boats but I love watching the sea from land. Maybe it's because I'm a Midlander.

I thought they had been got rid of to make way for private companies to supply refreshments. Well they have down our way.
I'm in Suffolk and the hospitals I have been in still have thriving WRVS shops and stalls raising money for the hospital wards etc. WRVS is also nationwide that does stuff like point of contact for lonely old folk, meals on wheels etc. Volunteers | Charity Work | Volunteering Opportunities | Worker | UK
Anybody that does anything to help people who are less fortunate than themselves get my vote.
That includes but not limited to RNLI, WRVS, Salvation army, Help the Aged.

With you all the way on that one
"... discipline is what the world needs today and etiquette, you know. For one of the noblest things a man can do is to do the best he can, yeah ..."
I'd also like to give praise to all the emergency sevices, Doctors, Nurses and ancillary staff in hospitals.
People bash the NHS but personally i think its wonderful. IMVHO!
When I was a frequent hillgoer, the RNLI always used to impress me most. The Mountain Rescue teams I knew well, in some cases personally, but I also knew that they had vehicles and in the worst case, the chance to dig a snowhole and take shelter that way. But where do you go for shelter when all hell breaks loose at sea, and the wind is howling like a banshee ? It boggles my mind that anyone would go out into those seas, knowing the risks. Mountain rescue is commitment, stamina and technical skills, RNLI is at heart pure courage.
But as I get older, my heroes are anyone who knows what they are getting into, yet still take the hard road, to detriment of their own life and safety, on behalf of others. I take my hat off to them all.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
Head-hunted member of the Nutter's Club - can I get my cranium back please ?
I have just given it a real pruning before it comes into leaf in the hope of getting some regeneration and the tree not having to work as hard getting water and nutrients higher up. If this doesn't work I'll replace it next year with something else.
