      Just to add to the Agent-bashing; I have just been looking at the particulars of a property that is for sale near us. On the particulars it states;

      "(Estate Agent) are now in receipt of an offer for the sum of £XXX,000 for (address of property). Anyone wishing to place an offer on the property should contact (Name, address and 'phone number of Estate Agent) before exchange of contracts."

      Surely that's encouraging people to "Gazump!?"

        I don't know about you Snadge, but I tend to use a computer when on the Vine, not a phone...I know I know, you still use gas lights up your way but here in Derby we are quite 'with it' you know.

          Quite...but they're all about the money G4. I chuck them in the same pile as legals and politicians.

            Oi! Zaz!

            Do you think I would have moved up here before I heard they'd put the leccy in?

            Mind you, I found the estate agents up here just as slippery as anywhere else.
            Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

              No it's encouraging people who might want to buy it to make an offer. If you were selling the property and your estate agent accepted an offer without trying to find other buyers might you not be a bit peeved? It doesn't say the offer has been accepted, because then it would be gazumping...

                Sorry, SBP, but I read it that they are heading toward 'exchange of contracts,' so I take it that the offer has already been accepted (and by the vendor, not the agent). Or am I missing something?

                  You have leccy in I'd keep that quiet if I were you...

                  I am beginning to suspect the whole banking crisis is a scam by the Estate Agents to be honest; not that I'm a conspiracy theorist but you heard it here first.

                        Do they sell houses that way when they have to close an estate- so set a date and look for best offers?

                                Indeed that might be one reason.

                                You put (and its fairly standard terminology) "(Estate Agent) are now in receipt of an offer for the sum of £XXX,000 for (address of property)..."

                                Says they've received an offer, not that they've accepted an offer...
