How do you de-ice your windsceen?

Blower (front and side) and rear windscreen heater on. Sit in car and listen to the news for a few mins till the windscreen ice begins to soften then get out and scrape. Took a while yesterday morning, the car looked like it was covered in white astro-turf.

Can't use the 2/3 of the garage I have left from putting in downstairs loo, but it probably wouldn't be wide enough any way - and it is full of 2nd freezer, washing machine and allotment stuff.

Note to self: Remember to turn off windscreen wipers before turning engine off at the end of the day. Two years running, I have torn the rubber off when the wipers move on turning the key!! You'd think I'd learn.

Get in, push button, wait two minutes....drive off!
Fords heated windscreens take some beating!! if i'm feeling generouse i'll pop the blowers on with the air con to suck the moisture out.

I assume people that are de-icing using the car heater whilst elsewhere are doing so on private property,as it should be noted that leaving a vehicle unattended in a public place (even when locked) is an offense under the Road Traffic Act


Regulation 107(2)(a). This states that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set. Exemptions to the requirements of this Regulation as to the stopping of the engine include a fire brigade vehicle, the engine of which is being used for any fire brigade purpose.

i leave mine fired up on the driveway sometimes, bit of barbie girl by aqua goes down a treat in my mostly pensioner cul-de-sac! lol

The previous night I turn the engine off half way through the wipers' stroke and underneath them I slot what Mrs Vince calls my executive windscreen cover.....which is actually one of those very large carrier bags that Debenhams or M&S put your new suit or coat in when you buy it, just opened out. Nicely covers about two-thirds of the windscreen.

If Iit's too cold to go out and do that, I am "lucky" enough to have a Ford, the best thing about which is the heated front windscreen. Gets through the frost in about 1½ mins.

Definitely Radio 4 on my drive. I'm not sure my car radio has any other stations.

I also have a Ford heated windscreen, but I think it's a bit crap. The car was less than 2yrs old when I bought it and it normally needs 2 cycles for the frosts we get round here!

So, my routine is start the car, put on heated screens and then scrape all windows, doing the front one last, to give it chance to melt a bit.

Don't like de-icers. Waste of money and an unnecessary chemical IMO.
