OH does the deicing (and the driving, nearly always). Scraper (one of those 3-way things, hard blade, rubber blade and a spongey side, with handle), plus run engine for a while. He's one of those who don't scrape all the ice off, but then it only comes back if he does, until things warm up a bit, but he does drive with EXTREME caution until he can see better (at least if I'm watching he does). On really bad days we aren't going to be going anywhere anyway, because this road will never get gritted, and the exit is uphill of the rest....Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I have a driver so by the time I walk out to the van and clamber into the passenger seat it is de-iced and warm. Would recommend this method to anyone.

Frantic scraping with the 3-way plastic thingy, about 1 min after I should have left. Swearing sometimes involved; depends if little ears are about or not. Never have the engine running as it's a personal pet hate of mine (no offence to anyone who does) and occasionally use warm water & 'on' wipers.

My car has a heated windscreen and is mostly in a garage at night but if left outside I just use a scraper on the door windows while the screens do them self, takes about two mins.
I read somewhere that using De-icer all the time can rot the rubbers.Last edited by Currysniffa; 17-01-2012, 06:06 PM.Chris

Turn on engine and back windscreen heater, blower on windscreen, shut car door, spray with de icer, get in car, turn on windscreen wipers, if it doesnt shift out comes the scrapper, but as I dont need to use the car in the mornings I let the sun do it. Last night I came out of the committee meeting at 9pm and had to clear the windscreenGardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache

Hopefully I'll have remembered to reverse it in, so the sun gets on to the screen in the morning. Failing that, I turn on the engine, and hit the 'defrost' button, this turns on front and rear heated screens and door mirrors, and puts the blowers straight on to the screen, and on fast speed.
I don't agree with spraying nasty chemicals. Now my heated screen is a bit 'iffy' in places (old age) I scrape the non-melted parts with a plastic scraper. Then I clean my lights! By this time my heated seat is warm, and all is well with my little world. All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Since I leave for work in the wee dark hours, I cover the front screen with a £3 plastic sheet that has rubber suckers to stick it to the inside windscreen round the door jamb (makes it easy to put on in windy weather). Start the engine, air-con, rear demister and heating on full, and after I've given the side windows and lights a quick scrape, I'm good to go.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land

Edit: I used to do it with my old clapped out fiesta too, but I wouldn't risk it with the car I have now. I seem to remember that there is a Universal Key to all cars ()Last edited by mothhawk; 17-01-2012, 07:19 PM.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
