I can guess what a shovel job was! Maybe I shouldn't explain it here though as it may be considered indelicate. But, for those who would like to know, here goes.....
A shovel job is when the food tin is so enormous that a little "gobbling rod" will not reach the bottom - so a shovel has to be used. Am I correct?

      Very Very close.

But they were all the standard 16/8oz tins.

So you never had any trouble reaching the bottom with whatever you had to hand?

PS, To bring this back on track, did you have tinned tomatoes when you were out on manures?

Bringing it back off the tangents (did I just say that??? ) Something to note about BPA, all (the known big brands anyway) baby bottles have now been made BPA free and have been for at least 2 years...
This tells me they acknowledge there is a problem with it....

Some of the tetrapaks of tomatoes and beans get little bits of mouldy-looking black stuff in the corners that have been tucked down at the sides. Puts me right off. I'd rather stick to tins or jars.

Tuna and salmon for me. Baked beans, we have fridge packs. Soups are homemade. Thanks TS! Good article...who can I donate all my tins to?

No, it tells me that new mums turn into from Chardonnay-guzzling chain smokers to neurotic organic food pregnancy yoga junkies and the marketing department has responded

Mothers lifestyle choices have nothing to do with it, in the States it was the FDA which ruled on baby bottles, and the EU here, according to everything I've read.

And just remind me, why is it we're all trying to grow our own food? Surely at least partially to get away from the many, many chemicals involved in factory farming, and processed food?!

I'm so off Chardonnay ...Pouilly Fuisse, so you got me all wrong, I'm afraid.

SW - it's why I started growing my own, yes. I'm so sick of the scientists playing with my food.

Well said Sarah, removal of chemicals and food miles are my main drivers for growing my own. The exercise is a bonus and freshess, choice and taste certainly a good thing but they came behind the first two. Personally I don't like using plastic very much at all, there is quite a lot of evidence about leaching from all sorts of different types and whilst I don't know if this harms me at all I prefer to remove the risk as on the whole I can use glass or stainless steel around the house which work just fine. I don't totally remove my use of plastics - would be very difficult to do so these days but I am happier with the bit I do and certainly don't consider myself to be neurotic about it all - anyway Chardonnay (better grapes are available ) usually comes in glass so not a problem!

However, to make some of you think that I definitely am neurotic I thought I'd mention that my health has improved the most when I cut out using anything with SLS in it, used to have horible dry skin and quite a lot of lady problems. Using natural SLS free toothpaste, soap, shampoo etc and a crystal deoderant and am right as rain - save a fortune on moisturiser too
