  • I've not tried this myself yet but I have heard this highly recommended by several people: The Oil Cleansing Method - A simple, cleansing facial massage for clear skin!

Basically means you dont need to buy any cleansers, toners, moisturisers, or any other fancy facial creams - so long as it works, of course! I have heard that some people need to balance the ration of Castor Oil (which is drying) to the other oil you use, you can also play around with olive oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, wheatgerm oil etc. I'm giving this a try as soon as my current stuff runs out. Which is very soon - so happy to report back if anyone is interested.

Household products-wise I must admit we do use shop-bought household products (but only those that are BUAV approved) but have tried some of the "green cleaning" methods such as lemons, vinegar, salt (which is great for killing weeds between paving slabs), bicarb of soda.

    • To clean my fridge once a month, I dip a half lemon in bicarbonate and scrub that around my fridge, wiping afterwards with a damp cloth. Smells gorgeous. Windows get cleaned with vinegar in warm water.
For the face my beautician friend, with beautiful skin, uses oats and warm water every morning followed by a spritz of homemade rose water, or witch hazel wipe for oily skin. She reckons the skin doesn't need moisturizer if you clean gently. Think I might try it.

      • Because I had slight eczema when I was little, the water for a bath was run through a sock filled with oats

        • Yes, I've used that trick but with muslin.

Spray cleaners are deadly to parrots, so I don't have them in the house. I clean everything (loo, basins, bath, floors, worktops) with white vinegar in a spray bottle.
The smell disappears when it dries (about 10 mins)

I use that too, it's absolutely brilliant. Was about £7 I think, but it's lasted me 4 years or more. I am a "sweater" (even in the cold I'm clammy under the pits) and it really works; doesn't leave stains on your clothes; won't leak in your washbag.

I didnt know that about parrots. We use white vinegar a lot for cleaning out the buns, good for neutralising smells.

I need to try that, its always been my worry with the crystal ones that they wont work as well. Will give it a try when current ones are used up.

They are a deodorant, so they stop odours and they do it well. Even after a run, no smell.

They aren't an anti-perspirant, so they don't stop you sweating. I haven't found a commercial anti-P that works for me anyway, even the 'super duper' ones don't work ~ but, you're meant to sweat, it's how your body cools you down.

                      • I use the crystal ones too. The absence of an overpowering,(masking) perfume makes you believe they're not working but they are. I've bought mine in the supermarket as well as in Health Food shops. They last for ages and you can buy refills for some so they're very economical and don't generate much waste. Even better are the crystals without any packaging but they can be awkward to use as they're random shapes that don't quite fit an armpit!

                        • I very, very occasionally use anti-perspirant (the stick/cream type, I think the one 'in use' is about 3 years old, and still at least half full, that is how rarely it gets used) but usually I just dry off sweat with baby-powder, dust THAT off, and repeat as needed. That is when a thorough wash isn't feasible, and those end with the powder-dry system anyway.
Some folk have been talking about having their home-grown Pasata in the freezer, might I ask how it is packaged???????

                          • My home made passata is in glass jars in the cupboard having been pasturised before storing Although the lids do have a plastic lining but the content isn't in contact with them all the time so hopefully that's not too bad.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
