I stopped adding sugar to most things a few years ago, but at that point i was drinking between 2 and 4 litres of pepsi a day...., i stopped that early last year and although i dont actually avoid foods with sugar in i have a lot less than i used to.
Yesterday i bought some stevia extract , i hate sweeteners ( they taste bad, bring on my asthma and many have suspect worse health hazards attached than sugar )
stevia seems fine to eat , so i can now eat grapefruits , cakes and similar that i had stopped eating due to needing sugar
anyone who wants to cut sugar out but cant on everything should try stevia granules , i used to have a stevia plant but it was too hard to use but the granules are okLast edited by starloc; 05-02-2012, 09:19 AM.Living off grid and growing my own food in Bulgaria.....

Always beware the health warnings in the papers, they are usually headlines taken from some rubbish research article whose statistics are always easy to distort. The fact is that keeping to a reasonably healthy diet and regular exercise can counteract the odd 'sin' food, (wine, chocolate, cake etc). Getting anxious about the adverse affects can (it could be argued) cause more harm through the release of adrenalin into the system (raises BP, affects hormone balance and can contribute to depression over a long period of time). Therefore, relax, enjoy life as it is far too short... and keep gardening. There is PLENTY of research extolling the fantastic effects of this brilliant hobby.)

Just got back from the lottie, I have to pass the High School and a shop to get there, about 50 yards apart. Now, I'm not usually quite so anal, but I counted the bits of rubbish in that short stretch...3 chocolate milkshake bottles, 2 fizzy cans, 3 energy drinks, 6 packets of crisps and twelve chocolate wrappers....and I got bored counting the little sweetie wrappers.
A lot of food scares do really annoy me, but I've got to say I agree with this one. I'd imagine that the majority of us on here don't have a lot to worry about, we all have a common interest in growing our own food, so I assume we all are fairly conscious of what we eat. But actually, we probably are the minority. I'll also hold my hands up and admit it's made me take a careful look at what my kiddies eat...and I'm not proud to admit that their diet has gone downhill lately, yes, they still get their 5 a day and mainly healthy meals, but I've also started giving in a letting them have crap cereal every morning, cheap yogurt tubes in their lunches and a chocolate bar instead of my own baking.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

The thing that bothered me about this one was the inaccurate statements included. Alcohol is NOT 'distilled from sugar' it is FERMENTED, by the action of yeast on sugary liquids. If they can't state that sort of thing properly, how can we be expected to really believe in the scare-side of it?
We all know that sugar needs treating with respect, and not over-used, and we also all know it isn't always that easy to stick to the rules.
Apart from making jam and wine, I think we get through about 3 bags of sugar a YEAR, and we don't eat much processed stuff, so I'm not fretting!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Last year we used about 100kgs of sugar.
90% of it went on feeding bees.
None of us add sugar to any drinks..
We use it to sweeten custard, making jam and cooked fruit.. and err that's it.
When I watch some trolleys in the supermarket, buying sugar is the least of some people's worries..
Ready meals, pasties, more pastries, fizzy drinks, fatty meats, burgers, cooking fat, goose fat, fries, chips etc.. No wonder there are lots of fatties..Last edited by Madasafish; 06-02-2012, 07:33 PM.

I HAD included goose fat in that quote, by mistake. I removed it to clarify my point, but in doing so simply confused the whole thread and worse, made VC look like an idiot.
I'd like to state that there's no added sugar in goose fat, and VC is NOT an idiot. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
