I have meeces, as we don't quite have the space for rats.
Not as intelligent, or trainable, but still very cute, (less so when living in your shed, admittedly) and like climbing on people- sort of a half-way house between hamsters and rats.

Boy rats are a lot more smelly, I presume you have girls?

I used to have over 20 of them, I had 3 seperate 'colonies' in 3 large cages....

You can litter train them, like a cat. A corner litter tray is best, and you should use non-clumping cat litter. When you clean them out, just pop some soiled bedding/sawdust/whatever in the litter tray and continue to do this for at least a week. Soon, all you'll have to do is empty and refill the litter tray (keeping it in the same place every time) and the rest of the cage will be easy!

They love hammocks and swing-y things - you can either buy them (expensive) or make them out of old jeans etc. Just make sure you use little chains/metal hooks to attach them, not string.

Check out The Dapper Rat for lovely cute piccies, but also rat information, and ideas on setting up a cage etc. The site is australian, but incredibly useful (they have hammocks and stuff for sale, and do ship to the UK, but it's probably easier to make them yourself!)

I do have girls, and was lucky that they came to me already litter trained.

They also have a hammock but I think I'm going to try making my own disposable ones, it's about the only thing in the cage that smells a bit.

I don't know if it is because they've settled and don't see the need to mark or if the treats I bought for them work, they are odour control.

So love them. I could be lonely right now, instead I have one tangled in my hair and making my cheek tickle...the other is somewhere under and behind my jumper!
