  • What lurks in your kitchen?

I've just sat down with a cuppa for a short break with you lot, and I wondered what you'd 'discover' when doing a kitchen spring clean.

We've had a water leak through our kitchen ceiling and need to replace part of it. This means a good clean first, fill the hole, seal the leak stains and repaint. Doesn't sound too bad when typed quickly, but we have wall cupboards above the work surface, leaving about 18 inches between the tops and the ceiling. This space has been used to store stuff I don't need to be able to reach easily.

However, I have just moved (and cleaned/washed up )
    1. A candy floss maker, not used since we moved in 7 years ago.
    2. A pasta maker, used once for pumpkin ravioli but too much hassle to bother
    again.
    3. An ice cream maker, I didn't use it last year because no space to freeze the bowl
    4. A mini donut machine, persuaded into buying this in a sale by Kissykit 3 years
ago, probably used about 3 times.
    5. A beer bottle crimper, from when OH used to make his own, the barrel to make it
in was sold before we moved here. (price on it says £1.75, came with 40 tops)
    6. My cake decorating equipment, used periodically for special occasion cakes.
    7. Empty jam jars used by sons for painting water when modelling and a saucer
    used as a paint palette.
    8. 3 'pooh bear type' ceramic honey pots that came with indian ice cream in and I
    just couldn't throw away.
    9. A slow cooker given to me by my sister when she moved house, never used.
    10. A sodastream, I used to use it for sparking water, but the cylinder ran out, and
I keep forgetting to get a new one.

I know I'm a horder and I should freecycle/sell some of the above (not no 6) but I always think I might want to use it/try it again.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
    Now a little Shrinking Violet.

Meat-slicing machine, used about 3 times a year.
Juicer, it's rubbish, never gets used.
Crystal wine glasses, wedding present, used once a year at Christmas.
Many empty sweet tins, 'just in case'.
Ice cream-making bits for Kenwood, rarely have room to freeze the bowl.
Mincer attachment for Kenwood, use that quite a lot.
Cake tins of varying sizes, haven't used for years.
Fly-screens to put over food, use in the summer.
Empty boxes from current mobile phones, 'just in case'.
Cutlery canteen, wedding present, use once a year
Wooden salad bowl from Africa, rarely used.
Mandoline set, will never use again after lopping off the side of my finger...

Mine too. That way I HAVE everything in the cupboards.
As it happens, I don't have much that I'd want to freecycle either.
Would love to buy a few gadgets, namely a pasta machine and have been doing a bit of research on it lately.

It's mainly boxes of cereal on top of our cupboards but there are a couple of cake tins (the sort you store in rather than cook in) which are full of decorating type stuff for biscuits and cakes. Are currently planning new kitchen and one of my main criteria is that I want cupboards to reach the ceiling, much neater and more storage . Don't do gadgets much and the ones I do get are usually considered for about 5 years before I buy so no risky ones although I did once buy a juicer on impulse - that went to the charity shop after about 5 uses as it was a nightmare to clean.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Me smug to Aunty Flo, nothing on the top of my cabinets not even muck. How do I know kitchen cleaning is one of my tasks.

The tops of my Kitchen cupboards are clean too, washed just prior to hanging garlands over the cornice at Christmas. The tops of my wardrobes are the same, I hate clutter.

I have said before but my OH has a philosophy if its not used for 12 months, its not needed and leaves the house. For this reason I dare not sit down.
