And as for monthly paid staff one year in four you work a full year. The other three you get away lightly.

      So there

I seriously dont' thing this has crossed my radar before and I'm not long away from my bus pass. So you can see that I'm not too bothered personally.

However, now I am thinking about it, and to play devil's advocate, surely the argument is that if a company makes 1 million widgets in a day, they must be having them made with free labour on 29th Feb. The same follows for any company; one extra day has been worked.

Any one in HR on here who has heard this argument before?
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I haven't heard this for a long time! But yes, I always understood that the 29th Feb IS the day when ladies can do the proposing. And if the man turns them down, he has to buy them a very nice present indeed.

So perhaps it's worth the risk just to get a nice present?
        Then again, perhaps not.........

Look at it this way. You earn £x annually, your monthly salary is £x /12. Some months have 31 days, some 30 but February always has less days, 28 or at most 29. You are always paid the same each month even though you work less days in February. Therefore, February is always a good month to work as you are paid for one or two days work that do not exist.

Well I'm annoyed Feb has an extra day , it makes Spring further off.....

Ah yes but............ your annual salary (pay for a whole year) is only divided by 12 for convenience of all concerned. I agree that Feb does 'feel' good because it has fewer days, but you are not being paid for days that don't exist; they existed in the months that had 31 days. Rather like the argument that teachers are paid for long holidays. They are paid for 39 weeks (I think) but their pay is spread over 12 months. But...... that's a discussion for another night.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has ever persued pay for 29th Feb. After all, two workers doing the same job could be paid differently if one was an agency worker, paid weekly, and another was employed on monthly pay.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Teachers get to work the same statutory number of days per year - and all the rest of the time they spend on the job isn't counted! I just got off the phone with an ex-colleague chatting over lesson plans!

Can you still buy those Love Heart sweets? The ones with the little messages on in sickly pinks and mauves? We used to buy those as kids and think it was wonderful if you had a romantic message out of the packet. I bet the messages will have changed these days!

My DD is a secondary teacher, so I know all about the out of hours work. She works .5 now but is still expected to do 100% of the parents evenings etc. and yes, she also has calls in the evening from younger colleagues for advice. My point was that the school hols are not all paid hols for teachers; their money is spread evenly over 12 periods.

Yes you can - I always buy them for a laugh to hand out on our Rambler's Valentines Walk. They aren't so romantic now - you get things like "text me" on them
