                • No news here either.. I've been so busy with work and all the drama that goes on there and at home with the boring house work etc that I've only been nipping on here for five mins at a time.
You got me so excited for you VC that I nearly bought a hat in London yesterday when I was there for a conference

                          • OOh, do tell more. lottie dolly !

then you will not know whats hit you
Ah yes, the "coup de foudre" as the French call it - a bolt of lightning ! I remember once going into a crowded room and there was a dark-haired lassie there on the far side of the throng. The instant I saw her it was as if everyone and everything else had disappeared; I had eyes only for her, I wanted only to find a way to meet her. I believe she felt the same way - she said later that she had noticed me the instant I arrived. (Admittedly, my being a loudmouthed punster, this does not say much.)
It never worked out, despite our evident passion for each other (much thwarted). She was seven years younger than me - 17 to my 24 - and I was in the throes of severe health problems which I thought would (and nearly did) kill me. Best not to love and then leave her to grieve so young, I thought...but now I wonder, would it have worked ?
Years later after she had gotten her degree, she returned to the area, wounded from a breakup with her boyfriend. The sparks flew anew; but at the crucial moment, as I had resolved finally to act, our privacy was intruded upon in the most infuriating manner, the moment was lost, and never regained !
So - was that meant to be, or not ? I will forever wonder...
But that shows one other thing which we need, I think. That magic spark, which is the mystery at the heart of romantic love. Many's the time I have been in circumstances where a relationship looks possible - co-inciding interests, similar personal likes or character traits, habits and abilities that complement well - and the lady is interested in me. But to me, it is just a very good friendship - there is no spark. I often wonder, is there something wrong with me, that I am so picky ? Or is it just that I am so different (and I am eccentric in many ways, have no doubt about it) that the embers are fanned less often ?
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

Head-hunted member of the Nutter's Club - can I get my cranium back please ?

                            • Don't trust the sparks, they can be deceptive. Last decent spark I had the ba@@@@d was already looking for someone else.

                              • Thanks Snohare. That magic spark does exist but can be very elusive!
What we look for in a long term committed relationship is miles away from a close friendship - but both can be equally satisfying. It all depends on what one is seeking from life.
I never wanted to get married, have kids or do any of the things that women are supposed to do - just do my own thing, travel and be independent. A spark knocked that on the head when I was 28. We were married for 30 years and never argued, honestly!
Its 7 years since my husband died and I have regained my independence. I'm back to doing what I want, when I want - but its not quite the same in your 60s as it was in my 20s!! However, there is one good thing about being older, I don't have to worry about getting pregnant!!!
